| Hybrids are a new kind of car that has become popular very recently. They use a combination of gasoline power and electric power. At medium speeds or over medium distances, the gasoline engine operates. For in-town driving, the battery power is used the most. The battery is charged when you apply the brakes. The motion of the wheels generates electricity to charge the lithium-ion batteries. However, if your battery runs dry, the engine starts using gas. Hybrids are the forerunners of AEV's. They have reduced environmental impacts and get very good gas mileage. The point of AEV's is to exactly that, only to a greater extent. Hybrids will help to lessen our dependence on gasoline for fuel and will therefore slow the "day of reckoning" when the world's supply of cheap oil runs out. This lessening of oil dependency will also make the switchover to AEV's easier, because people will already be partly there. Although hybrids are relatively new, efforts are already being made to improve them. Efficiency could be improved by making them able to plug into the main power grid. This would allow you to recharge the batteries at home and make the batteries larger. The gasoline engine would be used only rarely- at high speeds or on long trips. Since the engine would only operate on gasoline occasionally, the engine could be lighter and simpler to offset the additional weight of the larger batteries. The better batteries would also extend the vehicle's life- the batteries are usually the first thing to go on one of today's hybrids. Hybrids are the predescessors of AEV's. Buy a hybrid TODAY!!!! |
