This is a breakout sculpture, as we now complete the sequence of the creation of Mind. No longer dealing with tableaus on posts, this Sign is a consciousness that hangs on wood. It is the development implied by the number three the end product of numbers one and two in Plato's equation. Being triangular in appearance, the born Mind completes this inner trinity of power. It has elements of plant and animal, representing the totality of life on Earth.
The vine emerges again, this time giving life to a large mature flower-like pod with many seeds, symbolizing the potentiality or latent power of ideas. As in Sign Two, the circle is ringed by teeth. Yet here they also appear like small protective thorns. The flower is caressed by two supportive tentacle-like arms and claws, an important symbol in the Sign Series. They symbolize an expression of almost desperate love, trying to hold together a fluxing framework that at times becomes buffeted by change.
Surrounding this centerpiece, two limbs descend, the treelike bark peeling off to reveal new animalistic skin. On the left a developing embryonic figure appears nailed to the wood, almost as an afterthought. |
