Sign Zero: Spirit
So let's assume the role of a theoretical civilization and begin the journey with Sign Zero: Spirit.  As the sign's nameplate implies, the soul is here awakened for reincarnation:
Spirit, in the night,
calls to our soul with the promise of life:
"In return for this life,
I will take support through vines of the Creative."

"But we have no Creative for that is of a god."

"Then I will take your body so I can teach you change."
And Spirit left.
Then we cried.
The number, "O", denotes nonexistence. Yet it also implies eternity by showing us the shape of the cosmic egg.

The vine, a dominant symbol in Sign Zero, is representative of life. It flows out of Spirit's mouth and travels in and out of the sign post, giving it strength to support the tableau. It has similarity to the snake: a symbol of eternal life and regeneration found in other glyphs such as the qabalah's Tree of Life and the caduceus symbol of the medical profession. The tableau itself is a symbol for destiny; the recording of past deeds and future hopes. To possess these implies access to divine, magical knowledge.

Our souls express a fear of change. We are reluctant to create life because, for thousands of  previous years, only a god was believed to have the power to create Heaven and Earth. For us to have taken on this role was blasphemous. Even today most creative people get their inspiration from sources unknown to them. Yet Spirit is accommodating. He will use our physical existence as training ground.  The Body becomes a symbol for creativity. He will teach us change so we can support the spiritual existence of creativity.

Within the tableau are symbols of some spiritual ideas we will need to begin our journey. Objects within roughly circular windows are vague and hidden. Holy glass covers newt-like unborn dreams. Paper glyphs list the information needed for success. Horns are calling out the manifestation of Spirit. Thorns and nails warn of pain, suffering and passion.
