In the process, I've come to consider art as a scienceas much as biology, chemistry and physics. While our accepted sciences study by separation from the subject at hand, art studies by identifying with the subjectits emotions, its motivations, its reasons for being. Therefore, the exhibit before you necessarily creates an entirely new art form. It combines the visual imagery of sculpture, symbolism to express complex ideas, the psychosis of a dream-journey and esoteric precepts discovered through ontological exploration. I define this new convention as RomArt.
One major theme of this exhibit is creativity; where it comes from and how it is executed. Through 14 paper sculptures, the viewer is invited to consider events of the past and present, and various probable futures. Each sign becomes a station of learning---progressive snapshots of layered iconic deeds that tell the tale of creative discovery. Much as within a labyrinth for meditation, we stop at each station to gain information and learn direction as we traverse this curious environment.
In this exhibit, a theoretical civilization---through its continued technological work with DNA, stem cell research, robotics and cloning---psychologically re-enacts the demolition of a Christ-like image as it simultaneously rebuilds a new physical structure in its own approximate idea of sentient being. With the help of Spirit, science and technology begin to enable them to become creators of life. In a desire to live in the image of a god they are becoming a god. They are building their own version of a Christ that they hope will save them from death and provide a life eternal.
The psychic order of events, from Sign Zero through Sign Thirteen, reflects that of the essential three-step creative process. First, inspiration, encouragement and drive appear from Spirit. The Mind then comes forward, attempting to put these abstract ideas into a plan of action. Next, the Body executes these plans with physical creation. Finally, as with all existence, the circle of life is completed with a return to Spirit.
Essentially: Spirit, Mind and Body = thought, word and deed. In a timeless environment, all are simultaneously at work. |
