When sensitivity affects your teeth, eating experiences that are normally pleasurable can be very painful. Food and drinks that are usually enjoyable - such as hot coffee, steaming homemade soup, ice-cold lemonade, or fresh strawberry ice cream - can stimulate a sharp, sudden pain that shoots deep into the nerve endings of your teeth.
If you've experienced sensitivity, you know its sensation all too well. What you may not know is that this condition can be prevented or eliminated.
By learning about sensitivity, you can make informed decisions about preventive hygiene and appropriate treatments, as well as bring yourself one step closer to enjoying hot or cold foods and drinks - free of worry.
Dentin Exposure (Understand the Source of Pain)
Among dental professionals, sensitivity is commonly known as "dentin hypersensitivity." This term refers to the painful sensation that results from exposed dentin in your mouth.
Dentin is the tissue that makes up the core of each tooth. Above the gumline, dentin is covered by a protective coating of enamel. When enamel is worn away or decayed, dentin becomes exposed and receptive to sensations which cause painful nerve responses. Dentin exposure and pain can also occur when roots are exposed as the result of gum recession.
Dentin consists of a series of tubes, reaching down into the tooth's pulp tissue, that transmit nerve responses. Fluid in exposed tubes contracts or expands in reaction to outside stimuli, which stimulates the tooth's sensory nerves and causes pain.
Hot or cold temperatures, reactions to sweet or salty substances, vigorous brushing, and dental care procedures, are all triggers for dentin hypersensitivity.

Prevention (Learn the Basics)

Maintenance of healthy gums is the best way to protect tooth dentin from exposure. The seal made between healthy gums, teeth and underlying bone provides protection against penetration by bacteria, and keeps highly sensitive root surfaces covered.

Proper brushing and flossing are the basis for good personal oral hygiene. Vigorous scrubbing, or the use of hard-bristled toothbrushes or abrasive toothpastes, can destroy tooth enamel and cause gum recession. Plaque missed during brushing can lead to formation of caries and gum disease. Plaque can also irritate exposed root surfaces, contributing to sensitivity.

Prevention of periodontal disease and caries provides long-term prevention of sensitivity. Periodontal disease and periodontal surgery can contribute to root exposure, while caries and wear on restorations can cause an increase in dentin exposure.

Reduction of acidic food consumption is essential to preserving tooth enamel. Frequent consumption of foods with a high acid content - such as citrus fruits and juices - can chemically dissolve enamel over a period of time, resulting in exposed dentin.

Reduction of stress and elimination of habits that wear on teeth are also necessary to preserve tooth enamel. Stress can intensify habits such as chronic clenching or grinding of teeth, nail biting and chewing on hard objects, that wear on enamel and expose underlying dentin.

Personal Care (Know Your Options)
You may have already tried a special toothpaste for sensitive teeth, and found it unpleasant-tasting or only temporarily effective.
Fortunately, with advances in the research of new desensitizing agents, researchers have also studied patient preferences and habits.
Oral-B® Sensitive toothpastes' low-abrasion formulas (with or without fluoride) provide protection to the nerve fibers of your teeth - as well as a refreshing, pleasant-tasting, brushing experience. In many cases, sensitivity is relieved after only a few days of use, and continued protection is provided by regular use. Oral-B Sensitive with Fluoride is recommended to protect exposed root surfaces that are at risk of developing caries.
A desensitizing paste should always be used with a soft-bristle toothbrush. The Oral-B Sensitive toothbrush has ultra-soft, end-rounded bristles that are specially designed to be gentle on sensitive tissues.
Professional Care (Receive Proper Treatment)
Depending on the severity of your sensitivity, your dentist may recommend in-office treatments or special home-care products.
Fluoride, which is used in cavity protection, is also an excellent desensitizing agent that forms a protective barrier over exposed dentin. Fluoridated sealants are one of the many treatments used for more advanced sensitivity conditions.
Ask your dentist or hygienist for more information. Work together with them to "keep your teeth for life."
