It would take months to visit all of Romania's interesting cities and villages but, unfortunately, most visitors have only a few days to see the country. The destinations described in this book have been selected either for their uniqueness or their accessibility to the capital. Bucharest tourism agencies will plan an itinerary (programme) for you and arrange hotel accommodations, airline and car rental reservations where needed. (Domestic train travel cannot be reserved by travel agents.)

Snagov Mogosoaia Sinaia Predeal Trains

Snagov
Just 25 miles (40 km) north of Bucharest, this is a popular lake resort on summer weekends. A perfect day-trip, there are water sports and a water plants reserve. The lake also protects an island and monastery built in 1408 where the headless body of Vlad the Impaler, Dracula, is said to be entombed. Visitors can ferry to the monastery, but the monks insist upon respectful attire for entrance. A train to Snagov Plaja (Snagov beach) leaves early weekend mornings and returns in the evening. ONT Carpati arranges 5-hour day trips. It's a good idea to pack a snack, though there is a restaurant at the Hotel Magurele in the village.

Mogosoaia
Another good day-trip is a visit to Mogosoaia Palace, just 9 miles (14 km) from Bucharests center. Built in a park on the shores of a lake in 1672 by Prince Constantin Brancoveanu for his son, the palace is one of the finest examples of Brancovenesc architectural style. A couple of hours north of Bucharest lies Prahova Valley, a corridor that connects the regions of Wallachia and Transylvania, and cuts through the Bucegi mountains.
