Five years ago, after raising
llamas for about 12 years, I decided it was time to do something constructive with all of
the beautiful wool that I was shearing from these animals.
After some experimenting and
"putsing", I started making felted hats from this llama and alpaca fiber.
Much to my delight, I realized that people really like them, and it has been a very
prosperous market for me. The best part is that I really enjoy preparing the wool
and making hats.
Roman Farms, named after my father
who was a lifelong farmer, is located in Redmond, Oregon. We raise llamas, alpacas, and
miniature horses. Presently, we have about 10 llamas, and 20 alpacas, all of
which I use the fiber to create these wonderful hats.
After shearing the wool from the
animals, I send it to a woolen mill to have it washed and carded. After it returns,
I spin it into yarn, and then knit the hats, after which, they are felted and formed, and
decorated just for you. One of the joys of making the hats, is not knowing exactly
how they are going to turn out and each one is a surprise!
On request, I do special orders for
customers, or I can also make a hat from the fiber of your special animal for you.
Please contact me if you have any questions, or would like to place an order. We
look forward to hearing from you real soon!
