The watchtower provided a vantage point from which the vineyard could be observed, and shelter for the owner and his family during the harvesting period.
A spiral staircase round the outside of the tower provided access to the observation platform. Branches on top of the structure gave the watchman protection from the sun. The grapes needed protection both against natural predators and against thieves. |
