My Internet Background
It all started way back Year 1998. I was in Grade IV and only 9 years old. One day, while watching GMA 7, I saw a TV commercial endorsing GMA's official Anime website, WeAreAnime.com. It was full of information about all of GMA's Anime weekly TV Schedules and Anime datas. I asked my elder brother Kuya Ronald to assist me in browsing the World Wide Web and How To's. So just in case He's not around, I will still be able to manage to surf the World Wide Web all by myself. It is my first face to face encounter with a Personal Computer. I remember myself playing with the Mouse. Since it is my first time handling a computer mouse, I had encountered a problem pointing the mouse pointer to the right Desktop icons. But soon enough I find myself enjoying mouse handling and it's sensitiveness to motions. I tried to type in some characters in the Keyboard. At first, I had a problem locating the character keys. But that doesn't stopped me from learning basic Computer know-hows. Ever since then, I would go to a nearby Internet Cafe and surf the Internet 2 hours a day, 7 days a week. The first time I launched the Internet Explorer Browser, I feel that I'm lost in the middle of cyberspace because there are so many links to choose from and so many things to do, learn and experience. The first website I became familiar with is Yahoo.com. My first ever email account is with Yahoo! Mail. My username is 'roland_galicio'. I became an Internet addict. I surf the Internet like there's no tommorow. I learned how to be a responsible Internet user from protecting Personal Information and other stuffs. This addiction goes on for 2 years. I often argue with my parent's because they always say that I might neglect my studies if I continue doings this. But I refuse to do so, because I always say to them that I'm studying for my future. Because of the Internet, my typing skills improves little by little. I became more familiar with the Personal Computer and it's latest technology. I think I became a more confident computer user.
My Web Designing Career History
It was November 3, 2000, after my 13th Birthday and I'm in First Year High School, when I discovered my talent in Web Designing when I ambitioned to build my own website because I always get envy when I visit other cool websites created by Teenagers. I became fascinated and dreamed of having a website of my own. I've done a research in the Internet looking for a reliable free web host. I tried several different keywords in different Search Engines to narrow my seach but I failed to find one. Until one day, I saw a book which is adverstising their website. The URL of their site starts with 'http://www.geocities.com' and ends with a certain name. I have come up with an idea to come and visit 'http://www.geocities.com' to know if they host a website for free. I then found out that Geocities is also one of the Yahoo! Services offered to it's members. Fortunately, I have an existing user account in Yahoo! Mail. I used my ID 'roland_galicio' for the URL of my site. Afterwards, I registered for a free service activation from Geocities. I obtained a URL using my Yahoo! ID at the end of the address 'http://www.geocities.com/roland_galicio'. At that time, I have no knowledge in HTML language so I created my first website using Geocities' Site Builder (WYSWYG Program). I've selected a simple template and replace the text placeholders with my own Introduction and Pictures. As a beginner, you've probably say that my first ever published website is so trashy. Yeah, that's how I described my first website if I will compare my first ever Web Design with my Web Design Skills today. But I feel so happy when I published my first website. It feels like I have my own home in the Internet. Ever since then, I became familiar in Geocities Site Builder and created so many websites with different names and url. I've created an account for each website. Not even thinking of updating an existing site and make it improve little by little. As far as I remember, I have created more than 14 individual websites with more than 14 free user accounts. It was like, if I'm done with my site, rather than updating it, I'll just make a new account for my new site. I tried creating different types of websites such as a porno website (hehehe), Games cheats library, Password Protected Site and so much more. Too bad that I don't have a record of them or atleast a Screenshot of my websites because Geocities already deleted them. Just recently when Geocities announced that they will delete all the sites unupdated for months. That's why I always open my Geocities account regularly to assure that Geocities will not delete all my files and my website. I personally observed that my Web Design skills is improving every website and layout I do. I am the kind of Web Designer who never re-apply the past content, style and technique used in creating a new website. I often recieved many possitive comments on my site and I'm very happy with it. They always say I'm amazing because I have the skills to create a good looking and functional website at my young age.
The name "Occupied Space" History
I created the first version of Occupied Space last Febuary 2003. My first layout featured Sarah Asher Geronimo. Sarah Geronimo a popular Pop star and a great Singer here in the Philippines. That was my first time to use Adobe Photoshop 7.1 in creating my header image and editing the graphics I've used in my website. So how I come up with the name Occupied Space? I tried to think of a new name for my site. A name with a High Tech sound but have a twist of Sophistication.
