White River Rainbows
If I had to talk about the undisputed highlight of 2003 for me, I would definitely say my fishing trip to Arkansas. While only done over the 3 day holiday weekend around Memorial Day, the whole trip was an adventure.
The plan was from 2 friends of mine, Jim and Marc, and myself
to leave Friday evening and return sometime Monday night. When I
first said I'd love to go, and wouldn't mind driving, I was not aware that we
would begin this drive at MIDNIGHT! Ok, so I've been up all day waiting
to leave, and now I get to go on an approximately 565 mile trip at midnight.
Good thing I'm a road warrior. We managed to pull up to a hotel for a
buffet breakfast in Mountain Home, AR at approximately 9 a.m. Dead tired
and very hungry. After a wonderful buffet breakfast, we headed on out of
town to the home of a local that my buddy Jim knew from when he lived there
for a couple of months. This turned out to be a great advantage, due to
the fact that most of the public fishing spots are catch and release
only. We didn't drive that long and far just to throw back everything we
caught. By the time we finished talking to the local, it had
unfortunately started raining pretty badly. Now, the river itself is
generally about 50 degrees, and with the cold air and rain, it was not
ideal. Didn't help that the trout just weren't biting. Jim managed
to land a brown and a cut-throat, but neither were big enough to keep.
Cold, tired, wet and frustrated, we called it a day.
