| Mom & Pop Angelo sharing a piece of their 50th anniversary cake in a celebration at Angelo Field |
Vestal Say's Thank You To Mom & Pop Angelo -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mom & Pop Angelo were probably the two most surprised people in town Tuesday night, when Vestal decided to say "Thank You". Little League, Babe Ruth, Cinderella Softball, and American Legion baseball teams, plus many of the Angelo's friends, gathered at Angelo Field for a surprise party in honor of the couples 50th Wedding Anniversary and their 20th year of service to the Little League. An estimated 1000 people took part in the celebration. The evening began with dinner at a local restaurant. Mr & Mrs. Bernard Pierson, Mr & Mrs. Floyd Sarvey, Mr. & Mrs. Ed Kinney were present along with Mom & Pop. The dinner, complete with a special cake, was eaten to the background of baseball music played on a piano, styrofoam baseballs added to the atmosphere. The four couples arrived at the Little League field around 8:30pm. Mom & Pop thought they were going to see a game between managers and umpires. Much to their surprise, they were greeted by Vestal Police sirens and a field full of clapping people. Mr. Kinney gave a short talk, followed by Mr. Pierson. A plaque and gift of money were presented to the couple. Probably the highlight of the evening was when Tommy Angelo, their grandson and member of Swains Pharmacy minor league team, presented a dozen red roses to his grandmother, and a boutenniere to his grandfather. The fete continued with a presentation of a cake. Then Lou Gennet gave the couple baseball caps and balls which he signed, "Mr. & Mrs. Baseball". A reception on the field followed the presentation. Mrs. Herb Ferris, whose husband coaches the Swains team, can recall many ways in which Mom & Pop have served Vestal's Little League." They are very devoted to all Little League functions", she said. "They maintained the concession stand. Pop repaired all equipment during the winter and took care of the field in the summer. Mom ordered food for the concession stand and was there every night. Pop was very fair minded. he would root for one team one night, and another on another night. I think that through them, the whole Little league program has been a success." | Vestal News, Aug 6, 1970, by Bob Young We lost a friend last week. To us, he was a friend of some seven years, but to the Vestal Little League, he was a friend of some 20 seasons. Pop & Mom Angelo toiled for countless hours down at the Clayton Avenue diamond over the years, but Pop's work has come to a sudden and shocking end. Although Pop was 72, and under doctors orders to take it easy, his death last week hit the Little League like a bomb. Only the evening before, he and Mom had been honored at the field on the occassion of their 50th wedding anniversary, and Pop never looked better. All games were cancelled for the remainder of the week. On the morning of the funeral, the field lights burned in silent tribute, and the flag hung limply at half mast in the sultry heat, as though too it had lost a friend. ----------------------------------------------------------- Web Page editors note: there is more to the article, but due to space limitations, only the first paragraph is here. |
