We started our first pond a few years ago. You first dig a hole and then you put in a rubber liner. Then add water and plants and some goldfish. We used "feeder" goldfish at 10 for a dollar and they have gotten big enough to spawn. We have since added pond number two and created water falls and streams by way of electric pumps. Landscape lighting sets really are a nice touch.
