Known superhuman powers --- Rogue possesses the superhuman ability to absorb the memories, knowledge, talents, personality, and physical abilities (whether superhuman or not) of another human being (or members of some sentient alien races) through physical contact of her skin with the skin of the other person. (Sometimes she also duplicates in herself outward physical characteristics of her victim.) The victim's abilities and memories are absorbed for a time sixty times longer than the amount of time Rogue was in physical contact with that person. The victim loses his or her abilities and memories for exactly the length of time that Rogue possesses them. Due to unknown factors Rogue has permanently absorbed certain superhuman powers from Ms. Marvel I.
When Rogue possessed a duplicate of Carol Danvers' psyche, her "double" consciousness gave her high resistance to telepathic probes; it is not known if she still possesses this resistance.
Special limitations --- Rogue cannot touch another human being without temporarily absorbing that person's memories, abilities, and superhuman powers (if any) and rendering him or her unconscious. Remnants of the personalities of victims whose memories she has absorbed remain buried in her subconscious indefinitely. Certain powerful beings have proven resistant to Rogue's power.

Rogue's innate mutant power is to absorb the abilities, powers, persona and memories of virtually anyone with whom she comes into skin-to-skin contact with. Under normal conditions, the person concerned is unconscious for as long as Rogue retains their power and personality. The transfer sometimes involves physiological change, depending on the individual being absorbed. In Rogue's case, this normally seems to involve characteristics linked to a power or mutation, but the results can be unpredictable. At present, Rogue is unable to voluntarily control her absorption power --- skin-to-skin contact automatically triggers the absorbtion process.
Rogue's other powers are those she permanently absorbed from Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers). They resembled those of the Kree Captain Mar-Vell, though they never were exactly identical. These include superhuman strength, invulnerability, flight, and a "seventh sense" that warns her subconsciously of immediate danger. Ms. Marvel's hybrid Kree and human physiology also makes Rogue naturally resistant to certain poisons.
Rogue was born and raised in Caldecott County, Mississippi. Neither of her parents has yet been identified. Her father abandoned her mother before her birth and Rogue only had a family life after Mystique and her lover Destiny took her in. Why Mystique adopted the neglected, ostensibly "normal" little girl has not been revealed, although it is not inconceivable that she knew one or both of her parents or because Destiny foresaw her potential. We do not know what plans Mystique had to use Rogue's powers, but they eventually were eclipsed by her genuine love for her surrogate daughter. After their parting she would even seriously consider permitting Rogue's powers to be neutralized so that she could lead a normal life and return to her.
Rogue's powers manifested themselves at the onset of puberty. Her first experience came when she was necking with her friend Cody Robbins (Uncanny X-Men #185). When they first kissed, Robbins keeled over cold, and the shocked Rogue at first thought she had killed him, until she started hearing and seeing his memories in her mind. From then on, Rogue started covering up her entire body to avoid skin-to-skin contact. Mystique tried to shield her from hurt at first, but that only led to further tension. Finally, after another experience of her power --- with a boy called Freddy, Rogue abandoned hope of leading a normal life [Classic X-Men #44]. She now eagerly threw herself into becoming part of Mystique's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
After proving her value in several "milk runs" for the Brotherhood, Rogue was told by Mystique to steal Ms. Marvel's powers in order to assist a prison break of several captured members. Carol had just recently retired to San Francisco when Rogue ambushed her as she came home from shopping. The finish on Golden Gate Bridge took Rogue to within an inch of her life before she overcame her victim. But for unclear reasons, the transfer of Carol's psyche and powers became permanent instead of temporary (Uncanny X-Men #203). This shock overwhelmed Rogue and, in a desperate attempt to silence the screaming voices in her head, she hurled the unconscious Danvers from the bridge. [Avengers Annual #10].
For a time, Rogue became more ruthless and vindictive, which made her more suited for Mystique's purposes. Mystique later planned an attack on the X-Men, intending to extract information from Angel via Rogue's power. This soon involved Angel's then-girlfriend, Dazzler, against whom Rogue then pursued a futile vendetta for a time. This was in part because she was jealous of Dazzler leading a relatively normal life (Dazzler #22-23-24, 28).
Frustrated again and again, Rogue withdrew into herself. At the same time Rogue not only had to live with being unable to control her power, but the personality she had absorbed from Carol Danvers. And so one night, before her surrogate family got up, Rogue boarded a coach and left Washington for Westchester (Uncanny X-Men #170). With the support of Charles Xavier, she was permitted to join the X-Men. Rogue was eventually accepted as an equal by the other X-Men, proving herself time and again in battles with her teammates.
During the X-Men's residency in the Australian outback, Rogue and Wolverine were captured and taken to Genosha, where their superhuman powers were removed. The only way Rogue could help herself was to let the Carol Danvers personality take over for a while (Uncanny X-Men #235-238). They eventually escaped with the X-Men's help and their powers were restored, but from time to time Carol continued to assert her personality over Rogue's own. The intensifying conflict only ended when Rogue disappeared through the Siege Perilous during a battle against the Master Mold (Uncanny X-Men #247).
Rogue remained missing for a long time before she was finally reincarnated in her room in the X-Men's Australian headquarters, long after the team had left and the Reavers had retaken it as their own (Uncanny X-Men #269). She also discovered that she no longer possessed Ms. Marvel's powers and personality and only managed to escape from the Reavers with great difficuty, after the surprising intervention of Ms. Marvel, who had been reincarnated as a separate individual apart from Rogue by the Siege Perilous.
By quickly absorbing Gateway's powers, Rogue created a gateway through which she reached the Savage Land, where she discovered that she had now also lost her absorption power. The pursuing Ms. Marvel wound up on Muir Island, which at that time was controlled by the Shadow King. Apparently under his control, she finally caught up with Rogue. It emerged that Rogue's life-force did was not enough to sustain both bodies, and the Ms. Marvel was determined that she would be the only survivor. She would have succeeded if not for the intervention of Magneto, who killed the revenant. Ever since, Rogue is no longer troubled by Carol Danvers' personality. Eventually, Magento was able to use his own technologies to help Rogue recover not only her own mutant powers, but those she had taken from Ms. Marvel as well (Uncanny X-Men #274-275).
After thwarting an attempted conquest by Zaladane of the Savage Land, Magneto left Rogue and she made her way to Muir Island, where she fell under the domination of the Shadow King. Aided by her teammates she overcame Amahl Farouk's domination and played her part in his defeat by X-Factor and the X-Men (Uncanny X-Men #278-279-280, X-Factor #69). Rogue rejoined the X-Men as part of the Blue Team which was led by Cyclops (X-Men #1).
Over time she then felt drawn to her teammate Gambit, but their romance was stilted since Gambit kept his personal history a secret from her. When Legion travelled back in time to kill Magneto before he became a super-villain, he spawned the alternate timeline known as the Age of Apocalypse. For a time it seemed that the existence of the world as they knew it was about to end, and Rogue and Gambit decided to risk a kiss (X-Men #41). When the world didn't end after all, Rogue absorbed Gambit's memories and in them a terrible secret. She lost the memory of that secret when the absorbtion wore off, but the knowledge of it led Rogue to leave the X-Men on a journey across the United States with her teammate Iceman. This ended in a confrontation with Gambit in Seattle, after which Rogue decided to leave the X-Men on her own (X-Men #45).
Rogue tried to settle down in Pine Bluff, South Carolina, where she worked as a waitress. However, her landlady suspected that she was a mutant and informed the Friends of Humanity. She was captured by them, but eventually freed with the assistance of the amnesiac Magneto, now calling himself Joseph (X-Men Unlimited #11). Rogue decided to bring him to the X-Men for treatment, and after assisting them and the Avengers in the defeat of Onslaught he joined the X-Men with Rogue as his primary advocate.
