Article I Section 19 of the South Carolina Constitution prohibits imprisonment for debt.
Ex parte Halleman, (S.C. 1908) 60 S.E. 19 found that imprisoning a farm laborer for breach of contract is prohibited by Article I Section 19, thus establishing that conduct prohibited by the Antipeonage Act can be prohibited by state constitutions that prohibit imprisonment for debt.
