Jesse & Lucinda

A Hard Life

They worked hard in their fields all day,
Then the county took their fields away,
Three children and many grandchildren they saw slain,
Five sons in the Civil War, each went his own way,
Each torn by beliefs, but all longing for the day,
When they could return home to stay,
But in a few years that home was taken away
Now on their grandaughter's land, Jesse & Lucinda lay.

This poem was written by Courtney Leann Smith in 1999 (Age 13)
