Kuder - A History of the Kuder family name

During the 1700's, persons with the last name of Kuder emigrated from Germany to make a new life in America.  The first Kuder to come to America was Hans Peter Kuder, who was born in Neckargartach, Germany (in the province of Wurttemberg) and died about 1758 in Bucks County, Pa.  He married Catherine Dorothy Rossler.  He left Germany at age 22.  He arrived at Philadelphia on October 8, 1737, in the ship Charming Nancy.

How many children Hans Peter had is unknown. Large families were common in those days. It is know that Hans Peter had 3 daughters, Anna Marie, Maria Elizabeth and Maria Margaret.  One of Hans Peter's sons was John Kuder, who was killed in the battle of Germantown, in 1777. The Lehigh County, PA Kuders were descended from John. Many Kuders now living in the United States were descended through this line.  Another of Hans Peter's sons was Captain Valentine Kuder, who was granted by the legislature 400 acres of land in Bucks County in remuneration for his services in the Revolutionary War.  A great grandson of his was Laurence Sherman Kuter who rose to the rank of a 4 star general then retired to help develop the 747 aircraft.

A brother of Hans Peter was Bernhard Kuder, who also immigrated to America.  Many other Kuder’s in America are descended from him.  One of these descendants was John McLoud Kuder, who established Kuder Citrus Pulp Company in Lake Alfred Florida.  Another was John Kuder, after whom was named a Kuder Hill Road in New York State.  Another was Alburtus Kuder after whom was named Kuder Avenue in Akron, Ohio. Another was Rev Calvin Kuder who wrote a book about his missionary work.

Elias Kuder, Sr. was a son of Hans Peter Kuder. He was born 1754 in Bucks County, PA and died 1854 in Circleville, Ohio.  He married Catherine Spinner (daughter of Jacob Spinner and Catherine Stout) in Bucks County, PA and had 7 sons and a daughter. These were John, Jonathan, Elias, Peter, Daniel, George, Solomon and Susan.  One of John’s sons was Lewis Kuder who supervised the construction of a bridge in Illinois still known today as Kuder Bridge.  One of Solomon’s great grandson’s was George Frederic Kuder who devised the Kuder Preference Record, a widely used psychological test. Another of Solomon’s great grandson’s was Clarence Winfield Kuder to whom were born:

Robert Clarence Kuder, who wrote the Kuder genealogy book; and

Roger Leon Kuder who worked as an electrical technician on the wiring of Disney World  and also had a church building in central Florida, the Kuder building, named after him.

One descendant of Elias was John David Kuder, who was reported as “washed overboard” aboard a Navy ship off Norfolk in 1973.  His body was never found and foul play and a cover up were suspected.

John Kuder (son of Hans Peter Kuder) married Elizabeth Kuntz, and had the following children: Joseph, Solomon (b 6-5-1086 in Trexeltown), and John Jr.

Solomon Kuder (son of Elias Kuder and Catherine Spinner) was born 9-4-1790 in Cataawissa, PA and died 8-15-1873 in Washington Township, Wood County, Ohio.  He married Catherine Row 12-22-1816 in Circleville. He was educated in the public schools in Connecticut and on coming to Ohio; he resided at Perrysburg and served as a ship's captain on the Great Lakes.  In 1860,he moved to Tontogany, Ohio.  He had 5 sons and 11 daughters.  These were John, Elizabeth, Susan, Malinda, Nelson, Catherine, Margaret, Josiah Hedges, Mary Jane, Eliza Jane, Wellington, Sarah, Martha Hortensia, Victoria Virginia, Harrison and Caroline. Solomon Kuder was born Sept 4, 1790 and died August 15, 1873.  He was one of the early pioneers of Wood County, farming near Tontogany.  A veteran of the War of 1812, Solomon Kuder first settled in Tiffin, Ohio, Seneca County, where he engaged in milling, moving to Wood County in 1836.  His youngest child, Caroline, married Edward Ketchum, a carpenter in Tontogany, in 1876.  Their daughter, Orra, married Caleb H. Opperman in 1884. Another of Solomon's daughters, Martha, cared for her parents in their old age; in turn, her niece Orra cared her for.  Caleb North (1789-1875) was the maternal grandfather of Caleb H. Opperman.  He came to Ohio in 1829, settling in Washington Township, Wood County. In addition to farming, he also worked as a tanner.

A brother of Solomon Kuder was George Wallace Kuder and there is at present a lake in Iowa named Kuder Lake after him.

Josiah Hedges (Joseph) Kuder married Ann Van Tassel, and had 2 sons and 2 daughters. They were Albert D (who married Lida E. Jenne), Emma Mallinda (who married John Pettys), Henry Louis (who married Sara J. E. McColley) and Cora Bell (who married Charles Wolfley).

Henry Louis Kuder was born March 27, 1855 in Tontogany, Ohio and died August 24, 1906 in Elkton, VA.  On September 16, 1877, he married Sara Jane Elizabeth McColley.  She was born November 27, 1859 in Tontogany, Ohio, and died September 2, 1894 in Palatka, FL, and was the daughter of Robert Longworth McColley and Margaret Ellen Crom. They had 1 son and 2 daughters. They were:

Kuder book (the definitive research work on the Kuder name) now available from Robert C. Kuder.

KUDER GENEALOGY BOOK NOW AVAILABLE
Kuder-Kuter-Cooter-Cooder Families is a 300-page book on Kuder genealogy written by Robert C. Kuder of Maple Grove, Minnesota.
To say that it is painstakingly meticulous and through is an understatement.
Fourteen years of research and a thousand sources consulted, it is without doubt the ultimate genealogy reference work on the history of the Kuder name.  It lists over 2,500 Kuders.
Unlike some genealogies that only list who begat who, this 8.5” x 11” spiral bound edition describes what people did and includes dozens of photographs, maps and drawings.  It’s extremely well organized and interesting.
I have never met the author, but I commend him on the enormous amount of research he has compiled.
The book has a Library of Congress catalogue number, but not an ISBN bar code number, so is only available direct from the author.
Contact information for the author is: Robert Kuder, 222 W Eagle Lake Dr., Maple Grove, MN 55369, [email protected].
