Tufts University

Josh Martino wrote a column at FrontPageMagazine.com about his friend who was wrestled to the ground at Tufts University and physically held back while a group of America-haters defiled a likeness of the American flag.  Mr. Martino and his friend were members of a campus group who publish a conservative magazine.  By painting the American flag at an annual Tufts' observation, Mr. Martino's group were honoring the victims of the September 2001 terrorist attacks.  The campus lefties couldn't stand their fellow students demonstrating loyalty to country.

I wrote to Mr. Martino the day I saw his article (11/9/01), and he wrote back on 11/16/01.  On that day, I read his column again and saw that there was an email address for the president of Tufts.  My email to President Bacow is at the end of the page.

Hello Joshua,

Excellent article. God Bless You. You and your friend are great. By writing the article, you are opening people's eyes to the Leftist America haters. I congratulate you. Thousands will read your article and I pray that you will not have anymore persecution at Tufts. I'm sure you are like me; you realize that the divisive speech of the libs is always going to be around us in academia, but the shocking and hurtful part is when they turn to violence and theft.

I wondered if you would allow me to publish your article on my website. Check it out, and let me know. I would like to print your article on my site, which is devoted to the discrimination of conservatives that is out of hand in our country.

Dear Mr. (note - Roger's last name removed)

Thanks so much for your support. It's heartening to me, Sam, and our staff
to know that outside of Tufts, people will not tolerate violence towards
those who are simply expressing their patriotism. I'm sure the three
leftists who attacked Sam would not last a minute in a community that
supports liberty and love of country. The moment they leave the university,
they are in for a nasty surprise indeed.

I'd be delighted to allow you to reprint my article on your website. I'm not
sure it's my permission that is necessary, however. You may want to check
with the folks over at FrontPage Magazine before doing so.

Thanks again for reading. If you're interested in knowing more about my
magazine, The Primary Source, please visit us online at

Dear President Bacow,

I am disappointed that the three students who wrestled another Tufts' student to the ground and physically held him back were not suspended for one semester or expelled outright. When those students threatened the group from the conservative magazine, and later returned to defile a likeness of the American flag with the use of physical force, they acted inappropriately and against the rules that the university has established to protect individuals.

The issue hits home for me because I received a death threat at the campus I attend after a professor labeled me as a problem student who could possibly cause physical harm to others. One week after the slander, I received a death threat from a man who claimed to be friends with some women in the class.  I reported the terrorist threat to the campus police and they told me they could not question anyone from the class, even though there were two women who saw the man who threatened me. The campus police investigated me, the victim, and ignored my phone calls and letters asking for answers about the investigation and for more help. The police did eventually conduct a shoddy investigation when I threatened a lawsuit. The staff in charge of the police, including the SFSU president, have ignored my letters and phone calls requesting help in the matter. .

When a university applies utilitarian ethics, political correctness, or outright discrimination of conservatives - however you want to label it - you are magnifying the pain to the victims and setting them up as future targets. Please look back at the university's decision of the Probation 1 and consider if in the future, you can insure that students are punished appropriately. I suggest that in your role as president, you write to or speak with the campus police and others who deal with discipline at the university. Let them know that when students threaten or physically restrain another person on campus, the perpetrators must be punished in terms that are of consequence.

Sincerely,

Roger (note - Roger's last name removed)
