2.  Obtain college application forms during the summer before your senior year.Don't  forget to ask for an application for financial aid as well, if that is appropriate. Most information and applications can now be requested over the internet. If several weeks pass and  you have not received the form, you need to follow-up with the college. Don't panic, but don't sit around waiting forever either. If you phone in a request, follow-up with a post card, letter or E-Mail.
3.  The first step after receiving an application is to complete the personal information on the top half of the recommendation forms, (i.e. name, address, etc.) and give appropriate forms to the teachers and guidance counselor if required.  Remember  teachers and counselors will be busy; get youe paperwork in as soon as possible.  After you have completed the personal data on each teacher recommendation form, place it in a stamped addressed envelope to be mailed to the appropriate college/university by that teacher. It would be helpful to place all teacher   forms with stamped addressed envelopes in a folder and give to the appropriate faculty with a note to thank them in advance.
4.  Fill out  each application with care. Please feel free to bring your completed application by  the CAP Office so I can check your applications for errors and corrections. Do not leave your application to the last minute to fill out hurriedly, you are most apt to make mistakes. Allow yourself ample time to write a good essay, if one is required, to check your spelling, etc. Be sure that you answer every question asked. Admissions officers read applications carefully; slovenliness will be taken as a negative signal. Remember your college's important deadlines:

EA/ED Applications October   1
All Other Applications December 1
5.  Photocopy each application so that you will have a   "practice copy"  from which to work when you fill out the actual application.
6. Photocopy your application with essays to keep in your files. We do not make copies of   your application or essays for our files.
7.  If your application requires your parent's/guardian's signature, be sure to get it before you submit the application.
8.  Generally, think in terms of completing no more than six applications: one to two   "reach" schools,  three possible or "solid shot" schools, and two "safety"  schools. All schools chosen should be ones that you would be happy to attend.
9.  Please do not hesitate to see your CAP advisor if you have any questions, general or specific, about the college admissions process. No question is insignificant.Your part of the application is the one representation of you, generated directly by you; do the very best job   possible.
Number of Applications
At the end of the college search process, the student, the parent(s), and the counselor should   have evolved a list of 6 schools built roughly along the following lines.
6 Schools
7 Schools
8 Schools
2 reach
2 reach
3 reach
2 middle
3 middle 3 middle
2 safety
2 safety 3 safety
In exceptional cases,  students may apply to as many as 10 schools. It is expected that no list, if thoughtfully constructed, will exceed   6 schools. There will be no charge to process the recommended 6 applications.
