Roddick starts to roll
NEWS - 29/08/2001

US hope Andy Roddick was an impressive winner on day two of the US Open at Flushing Meadows.
The 18-year-old Nebraskan overpowered Slava Dosedal of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 - hitting 16 aces along the way.

"I just wanted to get out there, put some balls in the court in the first set and I started rolling in the second and third. I felt good," Roddick said.

Meanwhile, former champion Pete Sampras joined his compatriot in the second round after a 6-4, 7-6, 7-6 victory over France's Julien Boutter at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

"I still feel I'm one of the strong favourites, even though the year has been disappointing," said Sampras who is seeded 10 here.

Sampras' Wimbledon conqueror, the Swiss Roger Federer saw off Germany's Lars Burgsmuller 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. While Aussie Lleyton Hewitt beat Magnus Gustafsson 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 in the Swede's last Grand Slam event.

However, the going was not so easy for Juan Carlos Ferrero. The Spanish No.5 seed needed five sets to get the better of France's Arnaud di Pasquale: 1-6, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6, 6-0.

Another Frenchman to go out was eighth seed Sebastien Grosjean, who lost out 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 to Mariano Zabaleta of Argentina.

Elsewhere in the draw, Russia's Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Hicham Arazi of Morocco went through in five sets against Michel Kratochvil and Agustin Calleri respectively.

And Alex Corretja, the Spanish 11th seed, also had an early test before overcoming Raemon Sluiter of the Netherlands 7-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.
