by Dana Czapnik
Tuesday, August 28, 2001

No. 18 Andy Roddick blew past a slumping Slava Dosedel in their first round match Tuesday night in Arthur Ashe Stadium. With his fastest serve of the match registering at 139 mph, Roddick served his way to 16 aces in the one-hour, 46-minute match. Roddick never gave Dosedel the opportunity to assert himself in the match and dominated on serve with 79% accuracy on his first serves. Roddick will face Jack Brasington, another Florida native, in the second round.

This is Andy Roddick's second time playing men's singles at the US Open. His Grand Slam debut came at last year's Open where he lost in the first round to Albert Costa.

Roddick set a tournament record at Roland Garros this year with 37 aces in his winning match against Michael Chang.

At the U.S. Clay Court Championships in Houston, Roddick grabbed his second consecutive clay title, becoming the first American teenager to win back to back titles since Andre Agassi in 1988.

During Roddick's ten match winning streak this year, he won an incredible 20-out of-21 sets and held serve in 94-out of-99 service games

Slava Dosedel is playing in his seventh US Open. He had his best tournament in 1999 when he advanced to the quaterfinals before losing to 7th seed Todd Martin.

Dosedel has recorded 11 first-round losses in 15 tournaments this year.
