Harbor Seal Behaviors
|
|
Harbor Seals are very unique animals. They have been caught basking in the sun on moored boats! Their flippers act like rudders when they're in the water so they can move faster and better. In fact, once they dive into the water, their outer ear openings close up. Also, Harbor seals don't drink water. They get all their water from their food. Also, Harbor seals don't like to be touched by one another unless they're mating. If they are touched by another seal, they'll growl, snort, scratch, bite, wave their flippers, and butt heads with another. Other than that, they are never really vocal and only make noise when they feel threatened. However, pups vocalize in order to receive their mothers' attention. When Harbor seals are on land, they're very lethargic and barely, if ever, move at all. The only part of their body that moves the most while they're on land are their heads. They move their heads to look out for danger. |
