Harbor Seal Facts

Harbor Seals are commonly found in the ice-free waters of northern continents. This seal can also live in freshwater rivers and lakes. Even though these seals can be loners, they sometimes join groups of other seals, or pods, along the shoreline. Seals are known to be rough fighters but the Harbor Seal is one of the few that does not fight too ferocious. In fact, it's hard to tell the difference between male Harbor Seals and female Harbor Seals because they are roughly the same size. These seals along with Harp, Hooded, Ringed, and Grey seals can be seen in spots on the Long Island Sound. Harbor Seal pups are usually between 12-20 pounds at birth but even though they don't weigh much at birth, they can grow to be 200 pounds! These seals can live to be 20-25 years old. That seems really young to me. I know I wouldn't want to die at the age of 25. For food, these seals eat fish and sometimes squid and crustaceans. |
