| Chapter 1 Meter Maid |
| It was Wednesday morning at 5:00 and Rita was walking slowly down the quiet streets of London, checking the parking meters to make sure everyone had paid enough. There werent many cars anywhere that early the morning. A light fog hung in the air, making it feel damp and chili, but calm and quiet at the same time. Rita smoothed back her thick, brown hair and sighed. She had the night shift and in just a few hours she could go home and get some sleep. Suddenly a car came screaming down the street at a very high rate of speed. In the dim street light she could see the driver twisting around to look at her. She was a pretty girl of 17 and often the lads in town would give her a second or third glance. However, this car slowed down, turned around and came back. When the driver pulled up next to the side walk, she felt faint with shock. For who was it, but Paul McCartney! He smiled at her and asked, Want to go for a ride, luv? Of course she couldnt turn it down. She loved the Beatles and the day before she had been lying on her bed listening to Rubber Soul, their newest album, and wishing that she could meet those talented young men in person. This was like a dream come true! Eagerly she climbed in the passanger seat. Although she could tell Paul was very fond of her, she could tell that he seemed rather agitated by something. Is something wrong? she asked gently. He shook his head and smiled at herthat wonderful smile that just melted her heart. You look beautiful in the green dress, he told her as he loving looked over at her. She smiled and thanked him shyly. She began to notice that he seemed very distracted with her and hardly seemed to be watching the road at all. It also seemed they were going faster by the minute. How old are you, Rita? he asked, looking over at the lovely blue-eyed girl at his side. Watch out! she screamed as the car whizzed through a red light. It was too late! He didnt notice that the lights had changed. He swerved to the right to avoid an on-coming car and crashed into a light pole. A flash of light exploded before Ritas eyes and everything went black. Then she felt herself floating dreamily into the sky. |
