How To Use a Computer to Color a Pencil Drawing

There are many different methods of using a computer to color artwork, this is just the one method i used.

The first important step is to draw something you want to be colored. Make sure it is a drawing which you really like and will be willing to put a good deal of time into.

The next important step is to scan your drawing into your computer.

Now is the time where the real work starts. The first the I do to one of my drawings after I scan it is to open the drawing in Adobe Illustrater. In Illustrater I use the pen and pencil tools and make an outline of the original drawing. I do this because I want the lines on my drawing to be smooth and I want them to be the blackest black the computer can make them so that. This make the draw look a lot better and it also gives the drawing well defined borders which make it a lot easier to color.

After i finish outlining my drawing i open the drawing in Adobe Photoshop.
i then creat one layer for each area of color, like skin, hair, pants, shirt, eyes, and so on.
