Chapter 1 Arrival
Upon arrival a bolt of lightning struck nearby. The
electrical discharge momentarily overwhelmed my senses. Then
while gathering my senses noticed that the trees nearby were not
growing perpendicular to the ground and they were tall trees.
Looking around while thinking about this brought me to the
conclusion that I was on the side of a mountain. The electrical
activity going on made it difficult to sense much but not enough
to hide the fact that this was a forest, that it was dark and
stormy. While getting my bearings began to sense that there was a
bit of activity going on other than the storm. It was snowing
hard and the trees were blowing to and fro when another flash of
lightning lit the sky and momentarily illuminated the surrounding
area allowing a better view. Reinforcing the impression that this
was really rugged country. My first impression was this was an
untouched forest high in the mountains. There are patches of
previous snow on the ground between the trees and the rest was
being covered as I was looking around.
I began to think is it possible that my first try brought
me home? That was until I sensed a large animal moving close by
that looked something like a bear but yet different enough to
quell that idea. Through interaction found that the only thing on
its mind was something to eat. The brutal ferocity and gnawing
hunger in its mind was unbearable. So I rapidly disengaged from it
and continued to check out other things.
Testing my ability to move around, found that movement
could be accomplished by using the same method as on the last
world. By focusing my attention on something and willing to be
there worked just as well here as it did there. After practicing a
bit went up a tall tree to gain an overview of the surrounding
area. Examining the tree on the way up confirmed that this wasnt
home because its pattern of growth and type of leaves made
identification impossible.
While up the tree several lightning flashes illuminated
the area, further confirming that this was a mountainous area,
with a lot of tall trees and not much else. Seeing several nearby
peaks noticed that Im near the upper end of the forest, near the
tree line.
Looking down slope spotted something moving that looked
like running water but it difficult to tell through the trees.
Decided to check it out by moving in that direction. After moving
down slope about 1/4 mile confirmed that it was in fact a stream.
Moving closer to get a better look brought the conclusion that it
must have been storming for a while. Because the stream was full
of silt and raging rapidly down the canyon. Watching the river
for a minute or two gave the impression that it was trying to
climb out of its banks. Spotted a tree caught in its torrential
flow. Fascinated I watched the tree rush down stream and noticed
that the sky down stream was a bit lighter than the rest.
Indicating either daybreak or sunset.
After making the initial assessment that this was not home
and of being high in the mountains began to wonder where is this?
Then began thinking that the best way to gather information about
this world was to find some form of intelligence and pick their
mind. Not knowing anything about where this place is in relation
to anything else. Began to wonder where would be the best place to
start?
Assuming that most settlements start near rivers I decided
to follow the river. Concluding that as rough as the terrain is
here down stream would be better. Because next to any settlements
of any size that there should be agriculture and agriculture would
require land more open than this. Using this line of thinking
started following the river downstream while observing the local
area. On the way became distracted by an unusual rock formation.
While examining the rock formation one of the prowling animals
passed right through me. On contact it was apparent that it was a
hunter.
Through contact there is an immediate sharing and through
this learned that it was hungry and on the prowl. This creature
was fearless and looking for anything that would ease the stabbing
pain of hunger. Being a meat eater anything that moved would do.
Not being a self-aware rational creature gave me the option of
entering or leaving its mind whenever I chose. While in contact I
found that it was almost aware of the intrusion but its thoughts
were focused on obtaining something to eat. Sniffing the air
for scent of anything familiar. Catching a scent of, a picture an
animal came into its mind and it began to follow the scent. As the
scent grew stronger it began to ready itself for the kill.
Becoming tense and intently sniffing the air. Seeing movement it
tensed up and began to stalk its prey, unintentionally salivating
with the thought of something to eat.
It appeared to have a mass of about 60 kilograms and was
reminiscent of a mountain lion. Not finding anything informative
in its mind I disengaged and moved on to see what else could be
found. Continuing in the quest to find a higher form of
intelligence. Thinking that this would be the only way to find out
where this was. At this point the only thing that was certain was
that this place appeared to be a virgin wilderness like the old
growth forests of home.
Heading down river spotted another tree caught in the
torrential flow. Thinking that this would be a good means to cover
a lot of ground in a hurry. Hurrying down to the bank of the river
began to follow the tree downstream. When it encountered a rock
and rotated in to the shore. I succeeded in hitching a ride by
mentally reaching out and willing to be aboard, essentially
grabbing onto it. Which was somewhat of a feat because it was
moving fairly fast. Having no fear, being non-corporal there is no
need to breathe or worry about being crushed.
Once aboard just hung on for the ride and observed the
landscape as it flowed by. Setting back metaphorically speaking,
with hope that the river would soon bring me to civilization.
While riding down river on the tree the sky was becoming lighter
and the storm began to abate. Making it easier to see and make out
more of the countryside, which was still quite rugged. Off in the
distance as far as could be seen there appeared to be just more
tall mountains and deep cannons covered with trees. This whole
area seemed to abound with trees and a plethora of animal life.
The farther down the river the shallower and wider the
canyon became. Managing to hang on to the tree over a couple of
waterfalls and several whitewater rapids the river began to slow
down in its mad rush to wherever. Wherever it was going it was
generally flowing into the sunrise. By this time the sun was up
enough to truly call it daytime and the surroundings had began to
develop a few relatively open somewhat flat areas next to the
rivers banks. After passing several of these relatively open
areas spotted a structure in one that was not natural, it had been
put together.
Seeing this instilled excitement and the knowledge that
this world had intelligent life. With this revelation there was
nothing to decide, it had to be checked out. Being excited waiting
for the log to get close enough to the shore to get off seemed to
take forever. By the time it did the log had floated quite a ways
down stream. So getting back to the structure took some time.
While heading back to the structure, taking time to
examine the area more closely. This was still fairly rugged deep
woods country. Most of the trees had the appearance of some type
of evergreen because they had very narrow long more like needles
than leaves for foliage. There were rocks and boulders everywhere
amongst the trees with dirt and brush in between them. Wherever
there was dirt there was brush. Most of the brush is broadleaved.
Then spotted something under the brush that looks like mushrooms
scattered about. A closer inspection revealed that these mushroom
like growths were in fact fungus growths.
By the time I made it back to where the structure was. The
clouds had cleared enough to see a greenish yellow sun high in the
sky. Seeing a greenish sun began to muse, ok click your heels
three times and repeat theres no place like home; theres no
place like home. This is definitely not Kansas.
