Spring Over Conversion
To start we cleened the garage and pulled the jeep in. Now normaly the first steps are to start tearing the old suspension off, but for the spring over it's different. For the front the spring purches detemine the anount os caster for the front wheels. This must be retained for the SOA as well. So we took the angle finder , and placed it on a flat spot neer the pinion . Write down this number for future referance. Ours was just about 9 degrees. Now you can jack up the jeep and support it on jack stands. Ok start tearing everything apart. Take off swaybars, shocks, trackbar, steering, and all vacuum hoses, and brake lines.. Then I found it easier to drop the front of the springs to get the axle out. Have a set of stands ready to set the axle on.
With the axle out from under the jeep,
we grinded the axleshafts were the new perches would be welded. With that done it's spring over time. Position the axle under the vehicle and place the new perches on. Then bolt everything together like you would normaly, but just tight enough so you can rotate it.
Then we took our trusty angle finder and rotated the axle until we reached the 9 degrees we measured earlier. Now measure side to side and make sure the axle is center under the jeep. Tighten the U-bolts down, so it doesn't move. Check and Double check the angles then tack weld the purches in place. With that done take the axle back out to full weld the purches on.
Note: Having a strong weld is very important. If the welds are week the car will be potentialy dangerous. If you do not know how to weld , find someone who does.
