Rochester Food Not Bombs incorporated as a non profit corporation in October of 1999, is dedicated towards assisting local businesses and other organizations to reduce waste of perishable and non-perishable groceries as well as eliminating barriers for low-income people to access free, nutritious produce and groceries. RFNB strives to provide advocacy and build community for homeless and low-income people through incorporating homeless and formerly homeless people in the organization and serving free meals in visible and public places when weather permits. We distribute an average of one and a half tons of groceries and cooked meals a week to an average of ninety people.
Although many free meal programs and food cupboards operate out of the city of Rochester, Food Not Bombs fulfills a unique niche. RFNB is the only vegetarian free meal program and the only cupboard to specialize in perishable groceries and have no screening process. Most food cupboards deal strictly with non-perishable canned goods and require their clients to have proof of income and dependents. However, RFNB deals primarily with large amounts of produce and groceries with a short shelf life and can distribute groceries without a screening process. In any case, RFNB proves its necessity in the number of clients it serves.
