Bahasa Indonesia is consistently phonetic, meaning that words and letters never veer from their assigned sounds. Unlike English, Indonesian is purely WYSIWYS, or "what you see is what you say", i.e. is pronounced as it is written. It uses a Roman alphabet which is, for the most part, pronounced similarly to English with some exception (in the following the SAMPA phonetic symbols will be used, enclosed by square parenthesis: [4] indicates a rhotic flap, as the "r" in "remote"). ConsonantsMost consonants are pronounced the same in Indonesian and English. B is like the "b" in "bad" C is always pronouced like the "ch" in "church" D is like the "d" in "day" F is like the "f" in "fact" G is always pronounced like the "g" in "get" H is like the "h" in "hire" J is always pronounced like the "j" in "jazz" K is like the "k" in "key" L is like the "l" in "letter" M is like the "m" in "magic" N is like the "n" in "natural" P is like the "p" in "pet" Q is like the "k" in "kid" R is like the "r" in "roll" (always
stressed and rolled, as Italian and Spanish) S is like the "ss" in "guess" T is like the "t" in "test" V is like the "v" in "velvet" W is like the "w" in "west" X is like the "x" in "exist" Y is like the "y" in "yesterday" Z is like the "z" in "Zeus"
