Welcome to Woop Woop

Introduction to the Database

By Rob Malloch. Department of Film and Media Studies. Otago University.

"Welcome to Woop Woop" was shot in late 1996 and released in late 1998. As the follow up film to Stephan Elliott's previously acclaimed film "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" the film was highly anticipated. The reviews of the finished film, however, indicate an audience that was either confused, amused, or outright disgusted by "Welcome to Woop Woop". These reviews also questioned the social commentary in "Welcome to Woop Woop", or more accurately, the lack of it. It seems that "Welcome to Woop Woop" does fulfill the "international expectation of quirkiness, eccentricity and individuality" from Australian film, that Tom O'Reagan describes. Indeed "Welcome to Woop Woop" is a mixture of genre's containing eccentric characters, with an unmistakably Australian landscape. A comparison to Stephan Elliott's previous film "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" reveals similar characteristics, but some clear differences. The outback, for example is represented in two different lights. There is also a strong presence of American culture, and iconography in "Welcome to Woop Woop". This presence clashes variously with the "Ocker" tradition ,represented in other films like "The Adventures of Barry MacKenzie", and Aboriginal culture. "Welcome to Woop Woop" is a mixture of elements. Through the following links you will be able to navigate those elements, and other aspects of the production and response to "Welcome to Woop Woop".
