My name is Rob Koss, and I started keeping bees in 1999. I have had an interest in bees since my early childhood. My father was a citrus grower in Central Florida in those days, as was his father, and every Spring beekeepers would want to bring the bees into the groves to make Orange Blossom Honey during the citrus bloom. I was fascinated by the bees, the beekeepers, and the delicious honey they produced. Now I have my own bees, and with a lot of help from my wife, Laurie, we are able to produce a fine tasting Wildflower Honey. Pure, raw honey is much better tasting than most honey bought in the grocery store. It has not been cooked or processed, keeping the delicate flavor and aroma that make it so delicious! Many people believe it is better for you as well, helping to fight off allergies and colds.
We also produce beeswax. Beeswax has many uses. Beeswax candles are great! They burn more brightly than paraffin candles, and have a subtle, delightful aroma. Beeswax is also handy in the shop; just melt a little onto that corroded bolt and it will usually break free!
We use most of our beeswax as a wood preservative. The boxes and other wooden equipment used to house bees are constantly exposed to the elements. We think that soaking our woodenware in heated beeswax is a better method of preservation than paint - beeswax is a natural bee product and we are able to avoid exposing the bees to any harmful chemicals that may be in the paint.
