Kosrae is at 163 degrees East and 5 degrees North.  It is a high island covered with dense jungle.  The lush green interior is surrounded by a fringing reef.  There are several white coral beaches around the island’s rim.  The interior of the island is characterized by high, steep, rugged mountains rising to over 2000 feet at Mt. Finkol.  A dense tropical rainforest covers the interior.  Mountains account for 70% of the total land area, so virtually all of the population (approximately 8,000) lives in five coastal villages.  Several sandy beaches break through the mangrove shoreline to provide easy access to the narrow surrounding reef.  The reef flats that surround Kosrae are considered to be among the most pristine remaining in the world. Air temperature ranges from 75 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, with the average being 83 degrees.  Water temperature also averages 83 degrees.
