Alicia Keys topped the most polls in the Music Of 2001 competition with three, hottly followed by veteran rockers U2 and chill-out newcomers Zero Seven. The results represent a broad range of music, but failed to make a winner of Britney Spears, Radiohead or Gorillaz who were each shortlisted in 4 categories.
Alicia Keys had strong competition in all her categories; only just fighting off Dido and Linkin Park for Female Artist and Newcomer respectively. Her single "Fallin'" tied with U2's "Beautiful Day", who also defeated the likes of Britney Spears and Radiohead to notch the Live category. Zero 7 too only fought off Dido's "No Angel" and Radiohead's "Amnesiac" albums aswell as Fatboy Slim in the final vote to take Album of the year and be mentioned for their contribution to Dance music. The Moulin Rouge song "Lady Marmalade" managed to beat "Miss Jackson" by Outkast to the Video no.1. Linkin Park scraped to the top via hot competition from Starsailor, Ash and Stereophonics. Aaliyah's tragic and very premature death last year was somehow graced when she was voted the best contributor to urban music.
More so than the Films Of 2001 poll I compiled, this was a successful reward for music last year. The results showed the lack of pop, other than Kylie's triumph, in a year that even more than before showed breakthroughs for urban and alternative rock music, as well as the ever growing trend for chill-out dance music. U2 proved they still have what it takes as did Robbie Williams who captured his win with the greatest margin out of all the categories. Its worth mentioning too, that although Destiny's Child were voted Band of the year they received no votes at all for their album "Survivor". Madonna also showed us she is the undiputed queen of music with her topping the votes for her contribution to the world of music. It's disappointing for me that Radiohead or Gorillaz failed to top any of the votes, but I am delighted with Zero 7's album being voted the best, which I didn't at all expect...
