Students Cook


After covering a unit about food in the textbook , I gave the students in
two of my classes this assignment:� Write a simple recipe in English.�
This is what some of them turned in.� The authors' names appear in
parentheses; all have given me permission to reprint their work here.�
(Comments with asterisks are explanatory notes that I have added. )

Salads


Carrot Salad� (Kenji)

8 big carrots
2 cups cream
1/2 cup sugar
canned pineapple
1/2 cup nuts
1/2 cup raisins

1.-� First, grate the carrots.
2.- Next, in a bowl, mix the grated carrots with the cream and add the raisins and the nuts.
3.- Cut the pineapple in cubes and mix with the carrot and cream.
4.- Add the sugar and mix perfectly all the ingredients.
5.- Serve cold and enjoy.


Apple Salad� (Luc�a Salda�a Torres)

4 apples
1/2 cup manchego cheese, in small squares*
2 cups canned pineapple, chopped
1 cup sour cream
1 1/2 tablespoons mayonnaise
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup nuts, chopped

1.- First, peel and cut the apples in small squares.
2.- Next, combine the apple, the pineapple, and the cheese.
3.- Then, mix together the sour cream,mayonnaise, sugar, and salt.
4.- Combine this mixture with the fruit and cheese.
5.- Finally, empty the salad in a glass dish.� Decorate with the nuts
and refrigerate.� Serve and enjoy!� Makes 6 portions.

*If manchego cheese isn't available, use a mild cheddar or similar.


Tuna Salad (Virginia Archundia Ba�uelos)

2 cans tuna fish
1 can mixed vegetables
3 tablespoons mayonnaise
salt to taste
some crackers

First, combine the tuna fish and vegetables.
Next, add the mayonnaise and salt.
Finally, stir this mixture and serve with crackers.
It's delicious!


Chayote Salad� (Diana Pineda)

12 chayotes*
1 liter of water
1 liter of cream
1/2 kilogram of manchego cheese**

Boil the 12 chayotes in one liter of water.� When they are cooked, drain and cut them in squares.� Add the cream and cheese and stir.� Put one hour in the refrigerator, and it's ready to serve.

* a chayote (also known as a "vegetable pear") is a light green vegetable
** if manchego cheese is unavailable, use a mild cheddar or similar


Lettuce Salad� (M�nica V�zquez Olgu�n)

1 medium head of lettuce
200 grams white cheese
250 grams ham
200 grams pork sausage
1/2 avocado
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup cream

First, chop the lettuce, cheese, ham, sausage, and avocado.
Next, mix together the mayonnaise and the cream.
Combine this mixture with the lettuce.� Add the cheese, ham,� sausage, and avocado, and stir.�
Finally, serve and enjoy.


Vegetable Salad (Ana Belem Hurtado Flores)

2 medium stalks of celery
3 carrots
3 potatoes
some broccoli
3 tomatoes
3 peppers
2 medium cucumbers
1 clove garlic
1 small onion
1 medium head of lettuce
oil and vinegar to taste

First, wash the vegetables.� Next, cut them in slices.� Put the carrots, potatoes, and broccoli in water and boil for ten minutes.� Drain them and cool, then combine them with the rest of the vegetables on a plate lined with lettuce leaves.� Make a dressing with the garlic, oil, and vinegar and pour it on the salad.� It's delicious.


Apple Salad� (Nancy Olmos Serrallonga)

1/4 kilo of nuts
1 kilo of apples
1/4 liter of cream
1/4 kilo of raisins
sugar to taste

First, was the apples, peel and cut them, and put them in a container.
Next, add the cream, the nuts, and the raisins.
Put in the sugar to taste.� Finally, mix all.
Note:� If you want, you can add some sweetened condensed milk.

Make some delicious apple salad!

Desserts


Cream Cheese Cake� (Adri�n)

3 large packs Philadelphia cream cheese
800 grams sour cream
4 eggs
3 tablespoons flour
sugar to taste (about a cup)
1 tablespoon yeast
2 sticks butter

1. First, melt one stick of butter and coat the inside of the baking pan with it.
2. Mix together the cheese, sour cream, eggs, flour, sugar, yeast, and other stick of butter.
3. Warm the oven to 250�C.
4. Pour the mixture into the baking dish.
5. Put in the oven and bake for thirty minutes.
6. Serve hot, with coffee or milk.

Lime Pie (Diana Pineda)

"Maria" cookies (*similar to vanilla wafers)
1 can of condensed milk
1 can of sweetened condensed milk
the juice of 12 limes

Put the condensed milk, sweetened condensed milk, and lime juice in the blender and blend it until it is smooth.� In a pan, put alternate layers of cookies and liquid.� Then put it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.� Now you can enjoy a delicious lime pie!


Flan Napolitano (Julio C�sar Gonz�lez L�pez)

five eggs
one cup of milk
one can of sweetened condensed milk
pinch of cinnamon
two tablespoons sugar

Blend the eggs, the cup of milk, the sweetened condensed milk, and the cinnamon.� In a fireproof container, put the sugar in and heat it until it turns to carmel and burns.� Then add the milk mixture on top of the sugar and cover it with aluminum foil.� Put it in a double boiler in a pressure cooker and cook for 15 to 20 minutes.� Lastly, put it in the refrigerator for 2 hours, then serve.


Strawberries with Cream (Mar�a Estela Altamira Ibarra)

1 kilo fresh strawberries
1/2 kilo cream
2 tablespoons sugar

First, wash and disinfect the strawberries.� Next, in a bowl mix together the strawberries, cream, and sugar.� Immediately cover the dessert and refrigerate, if you want.� Finally, serve in glasses.� It's a delicious dessert!


Fruit Cocktail� (Susana Castillo G.)

1 sweet melon, in thin slices
1 medium watermelon, in thin slices
15 strawberries
2 apples, in cubes
2 bananas, sliced
1 medium pinapple, in cubes
5 kiwis, sliced
raisins
a glass of honey
a glass of cream

Cut the fruits in slices or cubes.� Put the fruit in a bowl and add the other ingredients (raisins, honey, and cream).� Put in the refrigerator, then eat the delicious cocktail.
