For steering, i am using a rack and pinion jig from a mid '80's corolla hatch, along with the steering column from it. why'd i choose this? a rack and pinion set is simple to work with, as it only deals with lateral movement, as oposed to a bell and crank set-up where i'd have to work with slight vertical movement too.
AS the pics show, it was waaaay too long start with. I was strapped for ideas on how to shorten it, until i found this www.tonysbuggypage.btinternet.co.uk/index.html webpage. It gave me the brilliant idea of chopping off the excess shaft. Fuck! why didn't i think of that!
So it was straight out to the workshop, and straight with the grinder. The pics tell the story.

The steering column. This will need to be shortened too, but at the moment i am unsure of how much it'll need to be shortened. will hafta wait till i get the base frame built and the rack in.
I am also making a custom boss kit. i could buy one, but for $80, blow that! Just do a weld job on it, saves having to make a spline. |

Overall shot of the shortened rack. If you compare to the picture second from the top, you can see how much has been cut out.
I have now welded that right tie rod on, but aint gotten a pic yet. It's just the same, just imagine that it's now attached to it, instead of resting beside it :P |

This is the amount of 'spare bar' i cut out. For measurement, i think it is about 8-9inches long, so a significant decrease. |

This shows a better view of the steering column. You can't really tell, but i've cut about 3-4inches out of it, so now the uni joints are pretty right next to each other. |
