The 3rd Dutch Mole
Episode 9
Harry got eliminated last time. He wasn't really sad about it, because after the
negotiating challenge, the atmosphere wasn't quite cheerful anymore.
Day 16 Montemor-O-Novo
It's the last few days of this adventure. The next few days will be decisive,
because one more has to leave. In the meanwhile they have become good friends,
but it's all for themselves, because this time it's about a place in the final
round.
CC
Ellen:"Harry has left us, but at this stage of the game I'm not
sad to see people eliminated, because it's all going really fast now and it's
part of the game."
John:"It's too bad he's gone, but I did expect it though. I
had a different group in my head, but you can't control that. I'm even surprised
I'm still in it myself."
George:"It's nice that there are 2 guys and 2 girls left. And
I think that John start feeling better either because Prince's departure or
because of the fact his girlfriend came by for a visit. So John is a tough
contestant now. And I didn't really think Harry had a lot of energy left. So the
best man wins... fair enough."
Day 17 Monsaraz
Near the border of Spain in Mosaraz is a fortress, which will be the starting
point and the finish of a relay race which will be tough both physically as
mentally. They have to appoint who has the best memory and who has the worst one
and two inbetween. They have to remember numbers and the last person has to
remember most and bring it to the tower of the fortress where they will have to
find some other numbers to open a case with 10,000 € in it. If it doesn't work
out, they have to pay 5,000 €. George has the worst memory, followed by
John. They are taken up the tower of the fortress and Jantien and Ellen
are taken to different places of the routes. George can sit down and
enjoy a great meal with a lovely view. The case is in an arena, but they can
only open it if they have the numbers. Each contestant (except George)
has 2 ways of transport. All together they have 2 hours time. John has to
go down with a cable-railway and once landed, sees a jeep with a sign standing
next to it '857'. He gets in and drives off. He got a map with the route he has
to drive to get to the next contestant. John keeps on repeating the
number in his head.
CC
John:"You see a sign with a number on it and you just mark it in
your head. 8 5 7, 857."
George:"John drove off in a four wheel drive and I was
sitting there with bread, cheese, wine, everything."
John:"There's one more elimination to go so it's hard now. I
didn't expect to be with the final four, it's quite an achievement on it's
own."
After half an hour, John arrives at the place Jantien
is waiting. He had to drive through puddles and mud to get there, so the jeep is
dirty. He wrote the number on the hood to remember it.
Jantien has to follow a river with a kayak and has the number 8726. She
also has to remember John's number. You can hear her repeating it in her
head (they probably had to repeat the number several times during the confession
cam, so they could use it) 857 8726.
CC
George:"I thought the game would get easier if more people would
be eliminated, but it's getting more and more difficult. To be honest I thought
I would have higher chances."
Jantien manages to arrive without getting wet. Now she has to drive a donkey with a cart to Ellen. 1 hour, 13 minutes and 24 seconds to go.
CC
Jantien:"I don't know what to think about George. He's
unpredictable and it's difficult to have him as a contestant. And Ellen is also
a big contender."
She arrives at the place Ellen is waiting with a horse. Jantien
gives her the numbers 857 8726 and says she had a way to remember it:"1986
was the year I started my studies, a year later is 87. Prince is 26 years old
and I made a kind of jingle out of 857. Eight five seeeeven!"
Ellen repeats the numbers again. In 1987 she went to Tanzania for the
first time. And she herself has 930. An hour left and she mounts the horse and
rides it to the fortress, repeating the number in her head.
CC
Ellen:"I'm really tired, the game keeps on going on and you keep
on thinking about people and the challenges and also about the group process and
of course who The Mole is."
The final part of the relay race, Ellen has to climb up the fortress to the tower George is sitting on.
CC
Ellen:"It was exciting. As if I was some kind of prince who had
to climb up a tower to safe the princess."
Ellen knows all the numbers and George has to get
the case out of the arena. But suddenly a bull enters the arena. He's got to try
and get the case, avoiding the bull. Time is still counting. 30 minutes left. He
slowly walks towards the case, but then the bull turns and he walks away again.
He nearly gets the case, put he's got the chain and lets it go. After a while he
runs towards the case, but the bull is after him, so he keeps on running,
straight to the other side of the arena, without the case. Then he can grab it,
but he's at the wrong side of the arena and has to come back to the others. He
makes it and now Ellen has to tell him the numbers and he has to try to
open it. Three cows walk into the arena, each wearing a number, but the
contestants don't notice it. 15 minutes left.
CC
George:"My hands were still whaking because of the
running."
They see a number lock of 4 numbers. Ellen:"OK
there was 857 andthe next number was 8."
But it doesn't work. The 4 numbers are the ones Jantien had: 8726. George
keeps on trying.
CC
Jantien:"And then I heard him mumbling '7 8 2 6' and I whispered
to John 'I think he's got the wrong order of numbers!'
John:"Jantien was sitting next to me and said 'What is he
doing with those numbers?!' and I told her 'Yeah, really weird!'. But I could
see that he was just nervous."
George has opened 2 locks already. One with 8726 and the
other one with 930. Ellen:"OK, now try 857. No you did 875."
They need another number and the host tells them to watch the cows in the
arena. They each have a number and they find 6 1 3 and try every combination of
613. He has opened the lock of the suitcase, but there's still a chain around
it, so they can't open it. Ellen tells George to try 857 again. George
tries but can't open it. Ellen:"Try harder, it's just a crappy
lock!" And indeed it is, the case opens and they still have 10 minutes
to spare. They win 10,000 €. The kitty stands at 44,300 €
CC
George:"It was just a simple puzzle we had to solve by trying
the combinations and keep on trying and eventually we had the correct codes. I
had to finish the work the others had done for me. So it was a no-brain
action."
The host immediately tells them she needs someone who can get a great story out of other people within 24 hours. Jantien, being a journalist, volunteers and she is taken away.
Day 18 Evora
Jantien meets an detective. He will teach her how to interrogate people.
CC
Jantien:"Tonight I will interrogate the others about what they
have done. If I find out what they did today I get an exemption. If they don't
tell anything I don't get one."
Jantien:"People do like it when you pay attention
to them and talk to them. But I don't know whether that still counts at night.
Do you think they will get angry?"
Detective:"They might, but then you make use of that."
Jantien:"But they are funny types. George is the most passive
one, John is funny: he looks tough on the outside, but he can also cry. Ellen is
analytic, she observes everyone and notes everything."
Detective:"You could get the strongest of them and give him a
chair."
Jantien:"That's the punishment and reward you were talking
about. How do you see something like that, so they sit in another way or
somehting?"
Detective:"That depends from person to person."
Jantien:"Do you think I can make it or is it too tough?"
Detective:"I'm assuming you'll make it."
3:00 pm The other contestants are in the car, driving to their
next location.
CC
Ellen:"Where's Jantien? Good question... I have no idea where
she is."
John:"Jantien is in another hotel now, involved with that
challenge. I heard it will take 24 hours so I think that will be a disadvantage
for her."
What they don't know is that Jantien is in the car behind
them, following them together with the detective. The contestants were told to
drive to Sintra where they arrive at 5:00 pm and have a challenge for 10,000
€. They will have to do the questionnaire of the second episode and get inside
Jantien's head. Because they have to try and answer the questionnaire the
way Jantien answered it in the second episode. They are standing at a
balcony where the host informs them.
What they don't know is that Jantien is sitting at a terrace somewhere
near. She can spot the others from a distance. Ellen goes first. Jantien
and the detective watch her. Jantien:"I think they're doing the
questionnaire."
John is next, followed by George. They have all completed the
questionnaire and all come together again where they will do a kind of
elimination. The person with the red screen (who had the least answers the way Jantien
answered the questionnaire) will get the money.
Jantien:"I think they're doing the elimination! Look she's typing
in a name! How weird!"
See who gets the red screen:
John only had 5 correct, George had 9 correct answers and Ellen had 11.
The detective and Jantien don't know what's going on.
Detective:"But is what happens over there for good?" Jantien:"No
that's impossible, because I still have to earn my exemption and 3 people remain
in the end. And there's three people standing over there and if one of them has
to leave, 3 will remain."
Detective:"Yeah so then you're probably in the final round."
Jantien:"No, something's wrong... I still have to earn my
exemption. If someone already has to go, I don't have to do my challenge,
because I wouldn't need the exemption."
Because John had the red screen, he gets the money, which he has to
keep on him for the rest of the day. To keep that money they can't tell Jantien
how much they won and what happened.
Midnight - Priso de Sintra
Jantien will have to interrogate the others the entire night. If she
doesn't find out how much money could be won, who holds the money and what has
happened, they can keep the money, but if she does find out everything, she will
get an exemption and they will lose the money.
Ellen, John and George are locked in separate prison cells.
They don't have any contact with each other. The cells are empty, there is no
furniture, so they have to stand all night long. If they give information to Jantien,
she will reward them with a chair, a blanket or a bed.
The detective can hear and watch everything on monitors in a separate room and
through an ear microphone he can coach Jantien.
CC
Jantien:"I got offered the exemption and in this stage I want to
get it."
1:00 am and John is up for interrogation first. He wants
to sit down, but Jantien tells him he has to keep on standing.
Jantien:"I would like to know what you did today. It could be a
very long night, but that's all up to you. I'm just curious how your day
started."
John:"Can I sit down?"
Jantien:"If you tell me something you can sit down."
John sits down:"What do you want to know?"
Jantien:"How would you describe today?"
John:"Boring."
Jantien:"Boring? And it looks like you're irritated."
John:"Well yeah, you get pushed in this cell and then I have
to come down here and you want to know what has happened and if it has to go
this way, something's not right."
The detective tells her to ask him what isn't right.
John:"You tell me."
Jantien:"No, you're the one talking to me."
John:"But I just told you I don't know. I know something's
not right, but I don't know what."
CC
John:"It was another act from me. It was only ashow that I was
irritated and didn't like it. Just to impress Jantien."
Jantien:"Did you do anything useful this
morning?" John shakes his head.
George is up and Jantien tells him about the challenge again.
Meanwhile George is leaning on the chair.
Jantien:"Would you mind not leaning on that chair please?"
George:"Oh no ma'am!" And he stand up, but still
rests his hand on the chair.
Jantien:"You're still leaning... we have have severe rules
here." So he stands up.
CC
Jantien:"Interrogating is a very different way of talking to
someone and it was difficult with Ellen because I do have a bond with her. And
then you have to talk to her in a different way."
Ellen:"I can't tell you anything more than what
I've just told you."
Jantien:"Ok, then you can go again. The doors of your cells
will stay open, because there will be more controle. So you can't sit or lie on
the floor and sleep anymore."
CC
George:"It was very difficult. When they put you in the cell,
you're alone and I always fall asleep then."
Jantien talks with the detective and comes up with a new
strategy. She is going to use the things she has seen and tell the others that
she has gotten that information from their fellow contestants. George is
interrogated.
Jantien:"I have information that you have been seen on a terrace and you had to do something there."
George:"Which terrace?"
Jantien:"You recognize it, I can see it on your face. What
was it if it wasn't a terrace?"
George:"It was in a tree."
Jantien:"What was it if it wasn't a terrace?"
George:"Nah that's not true."
Jantien:"What was it if it wasn't a terrace?"
George:"In a tree."
Jantien:"What was it?..."
George:"I'm not a good liar, but I won't tell you."
CC
Jantien:"No one wants to tell me anything. I just confronted
George that I had seen them doing something on a terrace and now my tactic is
to let the others come and tell them my bit of information."
Jantien:"I heard you had to do something on a
balcony."
Ellen:"I don't remember anything about a balcony. We were
just walking around and I went to the toilet somewhere."
Jantien:"George told me you sat on a terrace on a balcony and
had to do something."
Ellen:"That's impossible, we didn't do anything, we were just
sitting on a terrace, but we didn't do anything on a balcony."
Jantien:"What do you think he means then?"
Ellen:"I don't know, maybe he did something while I was away
or something, but I haven't done anything."
John is taken in and Jantien offers him a drink.
Jantien:"I heard you had to do something on a balcony."
John:"I don't know anything about that. Who told you
that?"
Jantien:"George and Ellen."
flashback
Ellen:"I don't remember anything about a
balcony." George:"I'm not a good liar, but I won't tell you."
The detective tells Jantien to ask what they were doing on
the balcony.
John:"We just walked around."
Detective:"He's frowning... you've disconcerned him a bit..."
John:"I only told you what I know."
Jantien:"Well... have you finished your drink?"
John:"No, can I take it with me?"
Jantien:"No."
CC
Jantien:"If it didn't really work I thought I wanted to play my
own game. I would call my Mole in and interrogate him to the bone."
3:00 AM
George is interrogated and the detective tells her to confront him with
the fact that she has seen them.
Jantien:"I know you were standing at the balcony of the tourist
centre."
George:"Who told you?"
Jantien:"I saw it with my own eyes. I was sitting on a little
terrace behind a tree and I could see you."
George:"Damn."
Jantien:"Now you tell me what happened."
George:"We had to do the questionnaire."
Jantien:"And how did that work?"
George:"I don't really know anymore."
Jantien:"Sure you do. So you did the questionnaire?"
George:"Ellen went first, then John and I was the last
one."
CC
George:"I was very tired and I just broke. At a certain point
you just start telling things even though you agreed with the others to tell her
nothing. Eventually you do start telling little by little. You think 'Well she
already knows that small part, a little bit more can do no harm.'. It's so weird
that you do start telling things anyway."
Jantien:"So you all did the questionnaire and at
a certain point you all came back again. Then what happened."
George:"That's for you to guess. I can keep some secrets to
myself."
Jantien:"But you know."
George:"But I'm not going to tell you."
Jantien:"Ok we'll arrange a chair for you."
George:"Fine."
George can sit down on the chair in his cell now and John
is taken back.
Jantien:"I know you have done the questionnaire. And I can tell
you that I've seen everything with my own eyes. You were at the balcony and I
was behind a small tree. You did the questionnaire, you came back and then
what?"
John:"I had to go."
Jantien:"You had to go? And what does that mean?"
John:"That I got the red screen."
The detective tells her to ask what the consequences of the red screen are.
John:"I don't know. Something's attached to it and I'm hoping to
find out what this evening."
Jantien:"Ok, you get a chair."
It's 3:40 AM and John too has started talking. He
confirmed that an elemination had taken place, that he got the red screen and
that there's something attached to it, he too gets a chair. Ellen is
interrogated.
Jantien:"Well let's start with the tough spot. I know you were
standing on the balcony of the tourist building. John and George told me you had
done the questionnaire and I even saw it myself."
Ellen:"Well I haven't been there anyway."
Jantien:"I saw a laptop on the balcony and I saw you had to
do the questionnaire. So tell me."
Ellen:"It just won't work, you're not going to succeed in
this. Just give up.
We're one big block."
Jantien:"You're not a block at all, I know a lot of
information by now!"
Ellen:"Yes, but you didn't get that indormation from
us."
The detective tells her to say it's all stupid boasting what she's saying.
Ellen:"You just can't negotiate with me."
Jantien:"Ok then you can just keep on standing up in your
cell, the guys already have a chair."
Ellen:"Oh they can already sit down?!"
Detective:"She's devastated about that, look at her mouth."
Jantien:"Yeah that block of yours isn't much of a
block."
Ellen:"Well you won't hear a thing from me anyway."
It's 4:00 AM and Ellen is the only one who doesn't say a thing about what happened and as a punishment she has to keep on standing up in her cell.
CC
Ellen:"Yes, I kept my mouth shut. I wasn't going to give any
information for a chair or a bed or anything so she would have an advantage in
this round."
Jantien:"George, your information seems to fit
well. So I want to check some information with you. What was the questionnaire
about?"
George:"About you. We had to get inside your head."
Jantien:"And what kind of questions did you have to
answer?"
George:"We had to answer the questions like you did in the
second episode."
CC
George:"At a certain point you just think there's a lot of money
in the kitty and I don't care about Jantien's exemption, because she's the Mole
anyway, so it doesn't matter. I just started telling things."
5:30 AM
George is fed up with it and starts telling. He gets a bed and a blanket.
Ellen is taken in again.
Jantien:"I'm still thinking about that money."
Ellen:"What money?"
Jantien:"It had something to do with a red screen. And I
really need to know it."
Ellen:"Why do you need to know it? What is my advantage to
tell you what happened? Other than not having to stand up? I'd rather keep on
standing."
Ellen is locked up again, still standing up. John
is interrogated.
Jantien:"I will tell you what I know now. What I have seen and
what I have heard from others. You can finish it. Within 5 minutes or else it
will take 5 hours."
CC
John:"I saw the sun was rising and I thought 'She's not getting
another 5 hours more'. So I wanted to put her on a wrong track at the last
moment."
Jantien:"I know you arrived at about 4:30 PM at
Sintra and you went to the balcony of the tourist building. I know you had to do
a test. That test was about Harry."
John, who kept on looking down, suddenly looks at Jantien when
she says the test was about Harry.
CC
Jantien:"The sun was rising, I was very tired and I had
to finish it. So I thought 'I'm going to tell John the test was about Harry to
deceive him'."
Jantien:"You had to get inside Harry's head and guess who he did the questionnaire of episode 2."
CC
John:"I saw in her eyes that she thought it was about Harry. So
I thought 'Just go along now. Take the risk!'."
Jantien:"I only need to know how much money you
could earn with it and who's keeping the money."
John:"2,500 € and Ellen has the money."
Jantien:"And what about the red screen and the thing that was
attached to it? It was that you wouldn't tell me anything about it or
something?"
John nodds.
CC
Jantien:"It was possible that John was lying, but if so, I would
have never find out the truth in 5 minutes."
Jantien tells John he can go back to his cell now
for a short while, because she has to finish the game.
7:00 AM
It was a hard night. The three contestants are let into Jantien's room.
John:"Jantien has made some friends today."
The host asks Jantien how much money the others could win and who
keeps the money.
Jantien:"They could earn 2,500 € and Ellen has the money."
The host tells the others to tell her whether she's right. John
shakes his head:"It was 10,000 € and I have the money."
Jantien:"How nasty! You have made some friends today
too!"
54,300 € in the kitty. John and Jantien hug. Ellen
hugs her too. George is just standing there. When Jantien looks at
him she points out her hand and George shakes it.
Suspicions
Ellen:"It's almost 8 AM now and I haven't slept one bit. I guess I
will crash after the elimination. The Mole hasn't done anything. Maybe he slowed
down the realy race or something. I think people don't suspect me anymore, but I
do think they have suspected me for a long time though. I think everyone has The
Mole know. Everyone's voting for John, I think."
George:"The numbers were all correct, so no one has been
mole-ish today. I'm sticking to Jantien. John will be a good contestant. He
can't be The Mole. It's too obvious. Jantien is The Mole. Tonight that suspicion
got stronger. I'm not sharp anymore and I don't like it that I have to do the
questionnaire now."
Jantien:"I've voted for Ellen all the way and I think I've
been blind about the others. I couldn't get hold of Ellen, because I always
wanted her to be The Mole. But if George is The Mole I will laugh out loud. I
can't do anything else then admit to the fact that I was completely wrong. I
don't know, I'm doubting between George and John. It would be good if John left
tonight, so I'm sure it's George then."
John:"There's not many people left, so I guess The Mole isn't
very active anymore. But this afternoon I switched to George. It's just a guess.
Karen was a guess, Jantien was a guess, Ellen was a guess... It's incredible
that I've had so many suspects and that I'm still in the game! But many I'll
leave tonight. We'll see."
Suspicious in this episode
George
seemed to be slow with the locks on the suitcase and was
wearing a red shirt. Very convenient when you have to get in an arena with a
bull.
George and John told some information to Jantien.
Jantien was going for the exemption instead of for the money.
Elimination
Who will get into the final round?
