The 3rd Dutch Mole
Episode 8
Prince had to leave the group last time. George:"Someone
else needs to be positive all the time now."
Day 15
Because of the visitors, the contestants didn't really focus on
The Mole anymore, but now it's time to concentrate again.
CC
Jantien:"It's as if you get more exhausted when you haven't
really been into the game than when you're constantly occupied with it. This
morning I sighed and thought 'Oh no, not again.'."
John:"The elimination was not fun. I didn't expect it at
all." We get to see some flashbacks of the cosy picknick. "Yeah
I do miss him. We had a lot of support wit heach other. Especially because
you're in a group of people you don't know and we found each other pretty
quickly and you can tell each other stuff. You support each other that
way."
Jantien:"You also start to realize you have to go back into
that weird world of The Mole."
Evora
They go to a circus and are split in two. Four people who think they are
good at negotiating:

Jantien, John, George and Harry are the negotiators.
And there's one person who is very good at concentrating: Ellen

The negotiators get in the circle of the circus where they find
4 briefcases. One has 5 minutes to phone The Mole, one contains 5 correct
answers for the questionnaire, the third one has an exemption in it and the
final one is empty. They have to negotiate with each other who can get which
suitcase. For each person they get 5 minutes and in the end they will all have
to choose a briefcase. If they all have a different briefcase, they win 5,000
and they can keep what's inside the briefcase. Whether they win or not. Ellen
can hear and watch everything. If she can predict who will choose which
suitcase, she can an exemption if she predicts it correctly.
Each contestant gets 2 times 5 minutes to negotiate with someone else. George
and Harry are up first. They will only speak once, so they have to make
sure they come to an arrangement.
George:"What do you want to have?"
Harry:"I'd like to have the exemption."
George:"But that was mine."
Harry:"Do you think you'll need it?"
George:"I just want it, period."
Harry:"I know everyone will try to go for the exemption, so
I'm prepared to sacrifice myself by choosing one of the other two briefcases I'd
like to have."
George:"If I don't get the exemption, I want to phone The
Mole. But we also have to appoint someone who takes the empty case. Why don't
you take it?"
Harry:"I don't want it."
George:"Why not?"
Harry:"The risk is too big for me. Maybe you should take
it?"
George:"I'm not going to take it."
CC
Harry:"I was prepared to sacrifice the exemption, because
evryone would go for that. And the other one I wanted to have were the 5 correct
answers. But when I was standing there, I thought 'More people will try and go
for that'."
George:"If four people go for the exemption, we
don't have the money and no one can call The Mole.... If I can call The Mole,
then..." THE LIGHTS GO OUT! They can't talk anymore.
Both Harry and George would like to have the exemption, but agreed
that if more people go for that, they will choose their second option.
Now it's Jantien and John's turn:
John:"I either want the exemption or the 5 correct answers."
Jantien:"I find that the correct answers have to go to the
person who is most unsure about The Mole. If someone is absolutely sure about
The Mole, he doesn't need the answers, because he's sure of it anyway."
John:"But I'm doubting between two people so I'd like to have
the 5 answers... what do you want?"
Jantien:"I was thinking that it's important that The Mole has
the exemption, because than the game will be fair for everyone."
John:"OK..."
Jantien:"I'm going for the exemption."
John:"You're going for the exemption? So you're The
Mole?"
Jantien raises her eyebrows:"Do you agree with that? I think
it should go to someone who can't do any damage with it. And that's The
Mole."
John:"So either you're The Mole, or you know 100 % sure who
is The Mole?"
CC
Jantien:"Maybe I'm The Mole or I'm very sure and then the rest
needs information and I don't, so I go for the exemption, but I played it
intimidating because I wanted them to be so intimidated that they wouldn't go
for the exemption anymore."
John:"But you can't share the exemption."
Jantien:"No that's true, but you have to give the exemption
to the person you think is The Mole. Because that can't spoil the game, The Mole
knows everything already anyway."
CC
John:"She wanted to put the exemption safe so no one else would
get it and that was a sign for me that she wouldn't be The Mole."
Jantien:"So the empty case and the phone are
left."
John:"You go for the exemption and I go for the 5 questions.
You talk to Harry..."
Jantien:"What does the person with the empty case get in
return?"
John:"He should be allowed to listen to the phone call with
The Mole. Or I donate some of my answers."
Jantien:"But you'll only get those answers during the
questionnaire, so you can't..."
John:"You don't know that."
Jantien:"Yes I do."
Meanwhile Ellen is watching thel and listening.
CC
Ellen:"It was obvious that she wanted to prevent someone else
getting the exemption."
The lights go out and they can't talk anymore. George and
John have their second and last talk:
George:"Harry would first like to have the exemption and his
second choice is the 5 answers. I want the exemption. And maybe the phone call
with The Mole. And Jantien?"
flashback Jantien:"I'm
going for the exemption."
John:"Jantien wants the 5 answers and I want the phone
call."
CC
John:"I told Jantien I would go for the 5 answers" flashback
John:"I will go for the 5 answers,
ok?" "And I told George I wanted to go for the phone
call."
George:"I'm going to take the exemption and
nothing else. Who do you want to give the empty case to?"
John:"Jantien will tell Harry he has to go for that
one."
George:"And Harry said Jantien had to go for it."
CC
John:"George was very nervous and too honest and I want to abuse
that."
George:"What did you two think I would
take?"
John:"We didn't talk about that."
flashback John
to Jantien:"So Harry and George will have to share the phone
call."
George:"We did think about what you two would choose.
Everyone would probably go for the exemption so we also choose a second
option."
CC
George:"I thought it was a kind of puzzle which we would solve
together."
George:"I agreed with Harry that we would go for
our second options, which was the phone call for me and the answers for
him."
Ellen is still watching everything.
CC
Ellen:"George wanted everyone to take a different briefcase so
that the challenge would succeed. A succeeded challenge for him would be if
everyone had a different briefcase and they would win 5,000 ."
George wants to go through with his agreement with Harry.
John lied about both his choice and that of Jantien. Harry
and Jantien both want the exemption. Will they get an agreement?
Harry:"I want to have the 5 answers."
Jantien:"I think they should go to someone who is absolutely
not sure about The Mole. Are you not sure?"
Harry:"No."
Jantien:"I'll take the exemption because people are
suspecting me."
Harry:"George is also going for the exemption."
CC
Jantien:"I didn't want anyone to have the exemption, because I
need all of my rivals. So I wanted to impress him."
Harry:"His second choice is the phone call with
The Mole."
Jantien:"So it's between you and John now then?"
CC
Ellen:"Jantien's aim was making sure no one would get the
exemption, no one would get the 5 answers and I also think she wanted no one to
have to phone call with The Mole."
Jantien:"Would you agree to share the phone call
with George?"
Harry:"No."
Jantien:"And what if you are the one who has to inform George
with a voice changer? And after the test the 5 correct answers get."
Harry:"If I'm still in it."
Jantien:"That's a risk you'll have to take."
Harry:"But I don't want to take that risk."
Jantien:"What do you think about me taking the
exemption."
Harry:"I didn't think you'd go for it, because you were sure
about The Mole."
Jantien:"Yes, so I don't need the information."
CC
Harry:"She said she didn't need the information, so she didn't
need that phone call, nor the 5 correct answers."
The lights go out. The contestants have been kept separate from
each other and have to write down their choice on a card now. If they want to
succeed, they will have to do what they said. But who can you trust?
We see John writing down '5 correct answers'. George goes for the
'phone call' and Harry writes down 'empty case'. We don't see what Jantien
writes down. If she chooses what she promised, namely taking the exemption, they
have succeeded.
They come together again and say what they have chosen. It turns out Jantien chose the 5 correct answers, just like John. The challenge has failed, but George can call The Mole. No one has the exemption and Harry has the empty case.
CC
Harry:"No one chose the case they said they would take. So it's
very confusing."
Ellen's assignment was to predict who would go for which
case.
Ellen:"Jantien and George would both go for the exemption, George
because he would be very glad with it and Jantien to prevent anyone else taking
it. Harry would play it safe and would go for the phone call and John
would take the 5 answers."
She only has John's choice correct and doesn't win the exemption. But
Harry can still save the challenge. The empty case contains a circus act
(three juggling balls). If he acts like a clown in front of an entire audience,
he still wins 5,000 . He goes for it. Make up and weird clothes are put on
and he plays a clown. He thought he would get rewarded for chosing the empty
case. He does save the challenge though and now they have a total of 29,300
in the kitty.
CC
Harry:"I was hoping I would be rewarded for chosing the empty
case and I thought their would be an exemption in it. I didn't expect there to
be 3 balls in it and that I had to something with that. I feel like I sacrificed
myself for the group."
Sao Manηos
Harry arrives with the others and they congratulate him and all have
dinner together. They are still talking about the challenge.
George:"So Harry, if you went for the empty case, why didn't you
tell me?"
Harry:"Because I hadn't decided it yet. Do you really think
that the person who got the 5 answers on the questionnaire will get very good
clues on who The Mole is?"
George:"You don't actually get the correct answers, you just
have 5 questions correct already, without even doing the questionnaire."
CC
Harry:"During dinner I said we didn't have to be looking at each
other like traitors, but everyone was silent and I said 'We have to continue for
another few days, are we going to look at each other like that all the
time?"
Harry looks at the women:"And what about you
two?"
They start laughing nervously and Jantien says she thinks Ellen
had a lot of advantage in the previous challenge. She asks Ellen and she
agrees.
CC
Jantien:"Ellen's role today was great. She could watch every
single thing we did, heard every word we said, saw the way we entered the
circus. I wish I was at her place."
George is preparing himself for the phone call and asks
the women what they would ask.
Jantien:"If we tell you questions you could ask, will you give us
the answers?"
George:"But you're a reporter, can't you help me a bit?"
Ellen:"George, is this gonna be a phone call with
yourself?"
George:"No not with myself..." and he looks
confused. The women start laughing.
CC
Ellen:"I asked him if he was going to have a phone call with
himself. He looked at me very confused. 'No with The Mole.'. And he said it in
such a strange way. So I said 'Oh ok so you just told me you're not The Mole!'.
His head got red and hedidn't know what to say."
The women are still laughing. Jantien:"Now you
have to say 'But nothing is what it seems!', George."
George:"But nothing is what it seems!"
Ellen:"Yes indeed!" They all laugh.
George locks everyone in their rooms so he can quietly call The Mole.
(apparently the crew was also making a lot of noise so no one would hear the
phone call, nor the Mole's phone going off. George goes outside and is
sitting in the dark. The screen fades.
Day 14
CC
Ellen:"Yesterday night George had the phone call with The Mole
and I think he returned at about 11:45 pm and we asked him some questions, but
we didn't really get any information out of it. I don't think George did
either."
Jantien:"You should be able to recognize from that phone call
whether the Mole is a male or a female and I think George didn't even find that
out. It was reassuring for me."
George:"My phone call with The Mole? I have to tell something
about that? ... that's difficult... I wanted to keep it to myself."
Harry:"We aren't talking anymore. Everyone for himself, very
clear."
Montemor-O-Novo
For the first challenge they have to appoint 2 very strong guys. John
and George are chosen. The host brings them to their location: a tree.
The tree has to be cut down. There are 4 squares. One means minus 10,000 ,
one means minus 5,000 another one is plus 5,000 and the last one is plus
10,000 . They can't push or pull, they can only use the axe.
----------
The 3 others have to drive a van to the tree. The van is blinded, so the driver
can't see where he is driving. One has to drive and the other two will be in the
back, watching two monitors so they can see where they go. They have to guide
the driver. However, the cameras are placed crossing each other. The camera
filming the left side of the road is shown on the right monitor and the one
filming the right side is shown on the left monitor. They investigate the van
and Ellen already predicts she will have to throw up.
----------
Meanwhile, John decides to go for the 5,000 , because the 10,000
is too difficult.
CC
George:"John has done this several times before. He looked at
the tree and estimated the centre of gravity of the tree. And it could only fall
in that one square."
John:"I have cut down a lot of trees when I was younger, so
this was the ultimate challenge for me."
They start sawing the tree. George says it's very easy,
but John explains it's only the bark yet.
----------
The cameras of the van are crossed. Left is right and right is left.
Jantien:"You have to think reverse.... I'm already getting
sick."
Ellen:"If I'm in the back here, I will block."
Ellen will drive and Jantien and Harry go in the back. Ellen
gets in and notices she can't get any fresh air in the van either. She starts
the van and they head off. They have an hour to reach their goal (the tree the
other two are chopping, but they don't know that yet). They have to follow
arrows which are placed alongside the road.
The host tells them their time starts now and Ellen starts driving. Harry:"Go
straight ahead, Ellen."
Then they notice something strange and tell her to stop. Jantien:"Oh
no, this is really nothing for me. The house was on the right side and there's
the sign. So we have to go backwards."
Harry:"Ellen we have to drive the entire route backwards,
because we're driving away from the arrow."
Ellen drives backwards. The host is still standing alongside the road
and while driving backwards, she's suddenly on one of the monitors.
Jantien:"No Ellen, we have to drive backwards!" Ellen:"Yeah,
that's what I'm doing."
Harry:"Oh then you have to drive forward." Jantien:"No
she's trying to find the backwards gear."
Ellen:"I am driving backwards!"
Jantien:"Oh! Try driving forward then. We thought you were
driving forward, but the cameras are placed in a strange way, so we didn't know
it was backwards... You have to drive forward."
They advance quite a bit. Harry says that if he doesn't say anything,
Ellen's driving ok.
Harry:"Just follow the road, you're doing great." Jantien:"A
bit to the right!" Harry:"To the right, to the right, to
the right." Jantien:"OK straight ahead now."
They almost drive against a tree. The branches of the tree scratch on the
windshield and the side of the van and Ellen laughs nervously.
12 minutes have passed. Ellen is off the road, but they manage to get on
it again.
CC
Jantien:"We just constantly had to stare in the shaking van to
signs on either side of the road. I didn't really feel good anymore after a
while."
Harry:"Naar echts Ellen, naar rechts." Jantien:"Links!
Links!" Harry:"Now we are contradicting each
other."
Jantien:"Yeah but I had to watch the left side." Harry:"But
then just say 'A little bit to the left.' "
The drive onto a heap of branches. Ellen has started sweating like a
pig. She's totally wet and suddenly burps. Jantien and Harry are
sweating too. They drive against a fence and take along a pole. Ellen
laughs nervously.
----------
Meanwhile, George and John are still chopping the tree. They don't
have a chainsaw or anything. They only have the axe, but are advancing.
----------
26 minutes left. Harry keeps on giving Ellen instructions and Jantien
comes in between at times too. Jantien sighs and says she's sweating a
lot. They drive off the road and the it gets bumpy and the van starts shaking a
lot. Ellen gets so very desprientated she gets unwell. She stops
the van:"Guys
I have to throw up." and runs out of the van.
Ellen gives up and Harry takes over, leaving Jantien alone
in the back. Ellen will continue on foot. They have 17 minutes left.
Suddenly they drive past a sign with an arrow on it that points to the left. But
they are driving straight ahead.
CC
Jantien:"At a certain point Harry had taken over and those signs
were really small on the screen. We missed the first sign and had to go
back."
Jantien is the only one guiding Harry. Harry:"Where
are we going?" Jantien:"I have no idea, I've lost track
of those signs."
Meanwhile they are close to the tree George and John are
chopping. They stop chopping and watch the van. The van drives into a ditch. Jantien:"Stop!
Oh man." Harry:"Shit, it was..."
Jantien:"But, you know... I'm very sick... I... can't see it
anymore. Try driving backwards."
Harry:"That's what I've been trying to do."
Jantien:"I'm so sick, I don't even know where that stupid
road is!"
Harry tries driving:"I'm stuck! I can't go left, nor back. I
think we're against a tree or something. I don't understand one bit of it
anymore."
Jantien:"I've.... I... I'm really sick."
Harry:"OK then we quit." Jantien takes of her
seatbelt and gets out. 50 meters till the end and they give up.
John runs to the van and encourages them to keep on driving because
they're almost at the end.
CC
John:"Jantien getting sick just before the end... either she's
The Mole or she's playing To be The Mole. If you know you're almost at the end,
which I told them. Then you keep trying a bit longer. That's what I would
do."
Jantien is getting some fresh air and Harry gets
out too:"I didn't understand when Ellen said, the arrow is pointing
straight ahead." Ellen arrives and John asks why she
quit. Ellen:"Because I had to throw up." John:"Are
you serious?"
Meanwhile, George is carving the letter G in the tree. On the other
side we see John's initial too.
Jantien and Harry are standing somewhere away from the rest. The
hour they got, has just passed, so they could have made it if they had
continued. Harry:"Ellen sent us the wrong way, even though she
couldn't see anything"
Jantien:"You know why it went wrong, because we went forward
and backwards and at a certain point I didn't see the signs anymore."
CC
Harry:"Ellen got sick as the driver and then Jantien, who was
guiding me, got sick too, so neither of them were a big help today."
Jantien:"Harry was driving straight ahead and backwards
and... and I thought if we still have to go so far and I4m sick as hell
already... and I also thought we were out of time too. But that's not nice if
you see that you only had to go 50 more meters."
The host asks if they're ok and tells them they can still try to
save the challenge, by parking the van under the tree. If the tree falls onto
the van, they will still win the 5,000 .
So they start off again, Jantien guiding Harry towards the tree.
They park it right next to it.
George is anxiously awaiting the results. "Shall we chop
now?!" John:"Nah, maybe we should wait till they are out
of the van." Everyone laughs.
CC
John:"You have to be able to drive well, but the navigator has
to be good too. If the navigation isn't great then the rest won't work out
either. And I heard that they were just yelling 'Left left left left LEFT!!!'
and it won't work like that, you just have to stay calm and left means slowly to
the left and double left means hard turn to the left or something. But it's just
very difficult. I think that if they had driven faster, they would have more
time."
The host the three van contestants are watching George
and John chopping the tree. It starts falling and they run away. The tree
falls next to the van, missing it with just a meter. It lands in the plus 5,000
square. They have 34,300 in the kitty.
CC
George:"We thought we could use the van as a kind of roll, so it
would land on the van and then roll onto the plus 10,000 square."
Harry:"Everyone agreed that we had put the van on the right
place. It's the tree's fault."
Suspicions
Ellen:"I went through the challenges of the past 2 days and thought
about the different roles everyone played in it. I'm choosing John, because he's
very strong and at the hydrocycle he didn't give much power. I also noticed
that, when cycling up the mountain, he was behind from the start." Flashback
John:"The next one needs to take over, this is too tough for
me!" "And then with Kerstin's kidnapping, John was on
the phone with the host and something went completely wrong with the briefing of
what we had to do. Today I didn't really notice anything suspicious, maybe he
knew how to let the tree fall onto the 10,000 square, but he deliberately
let it fall onto the 5,000 one."
George:"Since the negotiating challenge, no one trusts each
other anymore. No one did what they said they would do, except for me. Everyone
did something unexpected. They're all pointing at each other or trying to make
themself look suspicious. I choose Jantien as The Mole."
Harry:"I think Ellen's The Mole, although I'm not sure,
because I'm doubting between Jantien and Ellen. But I voted for Ellen last time
and that worked out fine for me. Today we were in the blinded car. Ellen got
sick as driver and Jantien, who was navigating me, got sick in the back of the
van. There's one thing that makes Ellen look suspicious. At a certain point she
said 'We have to go straight ahead here.' even though she couldn't see it. But
then she said she had opened her door a bit to get some air and that's the place
we went wrong."
John:"My last vote was for Jantien and I've also been
thinking about George, but he's not The Mole anymore for me, because he was too
nervous and too eager to succeed at the challenge." Flashback
George:"Then Jantien takes that case and you take the one that's
left over." CC George:"I thought it was a kind of puzzle which we would solve
together." "Harry isn't The Mole, he played safe and
chose the empty case and Ellen is too nervous too, she just wants to be The
Mole."
Jantien:"I'm still suspecting Ellen, but I'm also doubting
that I'm focusing on the wrong person. I think we're all making the same mistake
again, that we're all focusing on the one and the same person again. I'm
focusing on Ellen from the start and I think I'm missing out on things. And now
I think John could also be The Mole, but it's very difficult. Really really
difficult."
Suspicious in this episode
No one choose the case they said they would choose, except
for George.
If Jantien had taken the exemption as she said she would, they would have
won the 5,000 .
Both Ellen and Jantien got sick.
According to Harry, Ellen had told them where to drive too and
then it went wrong.
