The 3rd Dutch Mole
Episode 4
Kerstin didn't need the exemption after all. Dick was the worst scorer and he had to leave.
Day 7 Caramulo
The group seems to be getting closer with each other. But that's just
appearances, because some of them have something to hide. They all read the
letter they got in episode 1. It contained a phone number they had to call. Some
of them managed to do that and they got a letter.
CC
Karen:" 'Because you were one of the first people to call, you
can earn an exemption...' "
Ellen:" '... for which you have to let a challenge fail
tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, without being noticed.' "
Jantien:" 'If you talk to other people about the contents of
this letter, your chance to an exemption will be gone.' OK."
Prince:"An exemption means two extra days."
Kerstin:"It's a clear offer. I think I'll take it."
Karen:"Interesting... a soul-searching question."
The host wakes them up and they have to select two people from
the group who like to play with fire.

Ellen and Harry are chosen. The others leave their luggage in the
hands of this duo and have to split into 3 groups of 2. Each group is
transported to another place seperately.
Team 1:

George and Kerstin are dropped at the top of the mountain Cabeco
da Neve.
Team 2:

Prince and Jantien are dropped at the top of Caramulinho.
Team 3:

John and Karen are dropped at the top of Montanha do Pedro.
So each team is standing on the top of a mountain. Each duo finds a
letter:"This is a challenge for 10,000 €. Look around. On two mountain
tops you will see the others. Go to the center. Each team stands on one point of
a triangle. One of you has to go down to the center of that triangle and the
other has to guide the first person. The solution to this challenge is exactly
in the center of the triangle the three teams form. You have 40 minutes and your
time starts now. Good luck! PS: Remember this phone number, it might come in
handy."
Kerstin tells Georgehe should go down because he's faster and he's
wearing long trousers. In team 2, Prince goes down and in team 3 it's John.
So each team stands on a point of the triangle. They are ech about 2 km away
from each other and if they look closely they can spot each other. To find the
center of the triangle, some math is needed. Each team has a flag and a shovel. Jantien
tells Prince he should take the shovel and the flag along with him so she
can see where he is.
Independent from each other each team has calculated where the center of the
triangle should be on the map. Each person has a walkie-talkie, however there's
just one line, so only one person at a time can talk.
The guys are descending to what they think is the center. George:"I'm
holding my flag high up in the air and I'm under the telephone poles. Can anyone
see me?"
Kerstin:"I can see you George, you just have to follow the
telephone lines downhill, over."
CC
Jantien:"Prince went down with the walkie-talkie and when he
wasn't very far away yet I wanted to test the walkie-talkie and I called him,
but he didn't react at all. So I yelled that if his walkie-talkie didn't work,
he had to yell back, because he was still nearby. But he didn't react."
Karen:"In the beginning I got pushed away all the time on the
walkie-talkie, because Kerstin was constantly talking, giving instructions. Then
I heard nothing but rustling. So I think someone was constantly holding his
thumb on the button.
Everything is going hectic, because they are all talking
together.
Karen:"John, you have to go straight ahead over the asphalt and
then you'll see an orange roof."
Kerstin:"This is Kerstin, I have no idea where everyone is. I
can't see anyone, over."
Karen:"Karen for John, you have to go straight ahead over the
asphalt road. Don't deviate from it!"
Prince:"Jantien, this is Prince, over." But Jantien
doesn't react.
21 minutes are left.
Jantien:"Prince is that you over there in that small road?"
Prince:"Jantien I'm in an open field now, you have to see me
now. The same goes for Karen, you have to see me, I'm holding my flag in the
air."
George tells him he sees him and they meet up.
John is still trying to find them. He hears Karen say something, but
there's a lot of rustling:"Karen, I couldn't hear you well, could you
repeat?" And he waits for a reply... "Prince, this is Kerstin,
can you tell me where you are somewhere? Over." John shakes his
head. "This is John, Karen is out of the air, I cant hear her anymore.
I'm going to the village now to use that phone number."
Jantien is filmed sitting on top of the mountain, but not talking or
reacting at all.
CC
Kerstin:"Three people were guiding the game, the three ladies,
Karen on one top, Jantien on the other and me. Two of them were completely
absent. Jantien probably because she was going for the exemption and Karen is
The Mole to me anyway, so I wasn't counting on her."
Kerstin:"I don't think it's a good idea to go to
the village, because there's only 20 minutes left. You'd better go to a higher
point somewhere. Between out line and Prince's you have to go to the telephone
poles."
Prince:"Jantien! Some reaction please!" Jantien
is just sitting on the cliff.
John arrives at a house and asks if he can use the phone.
CC
John:"I lost contact with Karen pretty quickly and Prince and
George were already pretty close to the center according to Kerstin. And I still
had that phone number in mind so I called it."
John hears from the host that they are supposed to find a
phone and call her with that one. That phone is the one they can find in the
center of course. 16 minutes left. John tells the others what he knows
and to listen carefully.
George and Prince are discussing were the center would be and try
to find the phone.
CC
George:"We were standing next to a road and the perpendicular
Kerstin and I found was under the telephone poles. John and Prince started
searching together eventually and I didn't trust them one bit."
All 3 guys are searching for the phone. Ten seconds left...
Time's up and the phone starts ringing. John and Prince run
towards the sound and find the phone. Prince answers it. Host:"You
finally found it? You're out of time! You had to find the phone to call me. The
challenge has failed."
Karen:"Hello, this is Karen!"
Prince:"The challenge is over and we didn't make it."
Kerstin:"OK guys thanks for the effort."
Prince:"Jantien, maybe you contact me now, because I didn't
hear you at all!"
John:"Yeah Karen, you were absolutely great too!"
CC
Jantien:"And then I heard Kerstin yelling "Well, Jantien
and Karen, have you been drinking sherry cosy together?" So I angrily
pressed the button and yelled "We haven't been drinking sherry at
all!". I was very angry."
The women get back together again and start discusing the
challenge.
Karen:"Each time I said something, I heard nothing. Then I let go
of the button and I heard a lot of talking of the others. My reception wasn't
very good apparently and I was always drown out by you when we were talking
together."
Kerstin:"I still think it's strange, because at one point I
kept the line free because the guys had to find each other." The guys
arrive too.
Karen:"Well I kept on yelling that..." John:"Who
have you been yelling to?" Karen:"To you, to... I kept
on yelling."
Kerstin:"I'd like to hear Jantien's part of the story
too."
Jantien:"My part of the story is very simple. Prince left and
I immediately tried the walkie-talkie, but I couldn't in contact with him
already." Prince:"I didn't hear you at all, that's
right." Jantien:"No, I kept on..." George:"I
did hear you. You were in the air a lot."
Jantien:"Yeah in the beginning I kept on asking 'Who can hear
me? Can anyone hear me?' but I didn't get a reply. And then I decided to say
nothing at all anymore because the guys had to find each other."
Kerstin:"OK that was a good decision. I also want to ask the
guys something, did anyone get offered an exemption?"
Prince laughs. John:"I wish I was."
Monte Carvalhal
They get inflattable mattresses and have to spend the night on
the mountain. Harry and Ellen arrive with the luggage and start
telling what they had done that day. Harry:"We went to a quarry
and Angela (the host) was there."
~~~~~~
Host:"Guys, this challenge is worth 9,000 €. You'll get 3
questions about your fellow contestants. For each correct answer you win 3,000
€."
~~~~~~
Ellen:"She read pieces of your application letters and for each
correct answer we got 3,000 €."
~~~~~~
Host:"But stakes are very high, namely the luggage of your fellow
contestants. There are four barrels: A, B, C and D. You have to take the
backpacks of your fellow contestants and place it on the barrels you think are
the wrong answers, because the correct barrel will be blown up."
~~~~~~
Ellen:"We had to place your luggage on the barrels, but not on
the barrel we thought was the correct answer. Then the barrel of the correct
answer would explode."
Silence.
Jantien:"I don't believe it."
Kerstin:"No, I don't believe it either."
Harry:"But it is true..."
~~~~~~
Host:"Which backpacks are you going to start with?"
They choose the backpacks of Prince, Kerstin and Jantien.
~~~~~~
Ellen:"Let's go through the questions first. Well not questions,
but the pieces from the application letters. The first one was..."
~~~~~~
Host:"Who participates at The Mole to find out about the intensity of
mutual contacts and emotions? A: Kerstin, B: Karen, C: Jantien or D:
Prince?"
Ellen thinks it's Kerstin and Harry agrees.
~~~~~~
Ellen:"Whose was that? In a nice language?"
Karen:"Yeah, Kerstin."
Harry:"That's what we thought too."
~~~~~~
Ellen and Harry put the backpacks on B, C and D. Harry:"This
is quite bad."
CC
Ellen:"You're standing there and you do something... and you're
a mature person, you can decide not to do it."
Harry:"We are doing this. Shouldn't we just say
no?"
Ellen:"No." She laughs.
CC
Ellen:"It felt like a short-circuit in my head like "This
is totally wrong, this is bad." and still I did continue."
Host:"OK let's see which option is correct."
Barrel B explodes. Jantien's backpack burns down. Ellen and Harry
are bewildered. The correct answer was Karen.
Harry:"Oh no, Jantien is the sweetest of them all. Extinguish
it!"
Host:"It's too late for that."
Harry:"This is such a cruel game."
~~~~~~
Jantien:"My backpack?"
Harry:"Yes your backpack, totalyl gone..."
Jantien:"I don't believe you. It wasn't my stuff in it
then."
John:"I think that if you two can convince us, you earn an
exemption. That's what I think."
Harry:"They didn't tell us about that."
CC
Harry:"If you see the first one burning, you know what's the
meaning of the challenge. And even though we know that then, we still didn't
interfere and that's why I was so very angry at myself afterwards."
~~~~~~
Host:"Who hwrote in the application letter that he or she was desolately
sitting on a wet toilet seat in the evening? A: George, C: Jantien or D:
John."
They doubt between A and C.
Harry:"I'm almost afraid to answer." Ellen:"Me
too..."
~~~~~~
Ellen:" 'I was sitting hopelessly on a wet toilet seat.' We had
to guess who wrote that. What do you guys think?"
The group thinks it's George. Ellen and Harry both say
they thought it was George too.
~~~~~~
Host:"According to you the correct answer is A. So you can place a
backpack on C and D."
Ellen suggest to take other backpacks now to spread the risk. They
take Karen's and George's backpack and put it on C and D, while Jantien's
backpack on B is still burning.
Host:"The correct answer was C."
Barrel C explodes and Karen's backpack burns down.
~~~~~~
Karen:"My backpack burnt down? I don't believe that."
Ellen:"It exploded in front of our own eyes, with a huge
flame..."
George:"Start over your story and try to lie better!"
Harry:"But it's really true, we talked about it on how we
would tell you. But we're serious."
Karen:"Well you made up a great story, but I don't believe
you."
~~~~~~
Host:"Who had the original ending sentence in the application letter
that he or she would be waiting next to the mailbox and check their voicemail
anxiously the next few days? A: Prince or D: John?"
It's a tough decision, but they go for Prince, which is correct. They
win 3,000 € and have lost two backpacks.
Harry:"Dirty money it is...."
Ellen:"Yeah this is very dirty."
~~~~~~
Prince:"So if I've got this right... you won 3,000 € and we've
lost 2 backpacks."
CC
Harry:"I burnt luggage of my friends. I don't understand how
I've done it. I do now, because I was standing there and had a total black out
and didn't quite understand the challenge and thought it wasn't real. At first
we laughed about it, but when we got further into the challenge and into the day
and the night, it escalated so much and I felt like a traitor. Which was really
bad."
John:"I wouldn't have done it, because to me it was obvious
that you could say no. By saying no you have sabotaged the challenge and could
win the exemption you got offered in the envelope and none of the backpacks
would have burnt down. I would have taken the chance."
Kerstin:"How do you know the bags were filled
with our stuff? Do you know that for sure?"
Harry and Ellen:"No."
Kerstin:"And when it happened, did you check the backpacks
afterwards?" Harry:"No."
Kerstin:"OK so it could have been other backpacks?" Harry:"Yes."
CC
Ellen:"I don't get it either why I didn't run to those bags to
check if it was indeed the luggage of the other contestants. Why do those things
burn so quickly? Why didn't I even check the bags when we were putting the other
bags on the barrels?"
Harry:"We just... put the bags on the barrels... just like
that. We sacrificed them."
Kerstin:"There were the emotions of Ellen and Harry on one
side who felt attacked in their integrity. That they had done something that
normally they would have never ever done."
Karen:"But this is acting without a sense of respect! Whether it was fake or real... I don't mind my stuff blown up into the air. If it would have been your stuff, I would have been equally pissed off!"
CC
Kerstin:"And you had Jantiens emotions and the story became
worse and worse and then there was Karen..."
Harry:"If it was fake I think it's really dirty,
because now we have all these emotions..."
Karen:"Exactly and this is totally wrong. Totally wrong. And
I'm going to leave! I won't participate in this! They will have to make do
without a Mole!"
Everyone laughs and Kerstin looks into the camera:"This is
such a show."
CC
Kerstin:"And the group which was taken away by everything and
then there was me and I felt like... 'Guys this is so tiring...'. "
John:"At a certain point people start reacting so heavily and
I think that's a pity. Up till now the atmosphere was cosy and now it's forced.
We got a smack in the face. Not me anyway."
Day 8 - Caramulo
The discussion about the backpacks continued till deep into the night. There
have been a lot of emotions and the next morning, while driving to the next
destination, the atmosphere is tense. No one is talking.
When they arrive at their destination, the host arrives with Karen's and Jantien's
backpacks and explains that it was aal set up.
CC
Prince:"Of course they try to get reactions in the group. It's
all part of the game. When we had the bags back I immediately felt like "OK
we've got the backpacks back, everything's solved." Some people apologized.
Over!"
Gandara do Monte
John and Prince are separated from the rest. They will watch
the others parallel on two ropes over a waterfall. For each person who makes it
across, they will win 1,000 €. But they have to keep their heart rate down. It
is measured when they start and if it raises with 10, they have to stop and they
can't continue until it's lowered again.They have 1 hour for the 6 people to
parallel over the waterfall.
CC
Jantien:"I immediately thought 'Oh no, this is not a game for
me.' I think that a lot and I wonder why I still do it in the end."
John and Prince have to predict how many people will make it across within the hour. If they're correct, they win an extra 4,000 €. Prince tells John he thinks George and Jantien won't do it.
CC
John:"I tried guiding George down at the dam and I saw how
scared he was. His lips were shivering, he was sweating and he said he would
never do something like that again."
Prince:"Our group dares and does everything. At the dam, the
regatta... everyone is going for it a 100 %. So I thought everyone would do
it."
John:"Maybe they will all do it, but you can't
control your heart. I'm already starting to doubt about Karen."
Prince:"Karen will make it."
John:"I'm doubting about her. Harry will do it, Ellen will
go... Jantien dares it too."
Prince:"Yes she'll probably dare it, but if her heart rate
raises she has to wait."
CC
Karen:"It was totally my kind of challenge. It was my ideal
holiday activity and it aspects of my job in it. You can get your heart rate up
by moving and doing efforts, because the efforts aren't so heavy and it
compensates the possible rise of your heart rate of excitement."
Prince thinks all six people will get across, but John
changes his mind and they go for 5 people.
Karen is doing some aerobics exercises to get her heart rate up before she
starts. Her starting rate is 172. It drops to 163 and slowly rises till 167 but
she already made it to the other side. Karen:"The rope is very
high! I don't think Jantien can reach it!"
The others can keep track of the heart rate of the person on the ropes and
can tell it through a megaphone.
Kerstin starts at 129, but after 4 seconds she's already way too high
above the 139 limit. She has got 145 and has to wait for it to drop. It goes
down to 138, she moves 2 steps and it jumps to 143 again. Karen is using
the megaphone:"It's too high!"
CC
Kerstin:"My main goal in The Mole is that I want to do all
challenges. So I'm going for the last 3 contestants. And if I get the choice
between money or an exemption, I go for the exemption. Because the exemption is
a ticket towards the final 3 and the money isn't."
Kerstin goes back and lets someone else try first. Kerstin:"The
129 I had from the start, was absolutely absurd, because normally my heart rate
is at 150."
George goes and starts at 127. There's 38 minutes left. after 10
seconds, George's heart rate has risen to 137 and he has to wait. A few
seconds later Karen tells him he can go again. "You've got 130
now." George takes a few steps, but it goes back to 137. Karen:"Stop!
Sorry!" It keeps on rising to 146... but then goes back down again to
133. Karen:"OK you can go again! 133, very good!" George
continues. Karen:"Sorry! Stop! It's too high again. Concentrate.
I'm sorry!" The heart rate goes from 140 to 145 Karen:"You're
doing excellent George, just rest a bit."
CC
Jantien:"I think that, when you've got the megaphone, you can
make people very nervous by constantly yelling 'Yes! No! Good!' so the heart
rises."
George makes it and everyone applauds.
CC
George:"It was a personal victory for me. I've got fear of
heights, but it wasn't as scary as the abseiling. I had more control of the
situation wit hthe ropes. Even though I had a high heart rate, I did do
it."
Harry and Ellen make it over without having to
stop.
Kerstin tries again, but she has to stop after 10 seconds. But it only
takes 5 seconds and she can continue again and makes it across. 10 minutes left.
Five contestants have made it to the other side. If Jantien makes it too,
they won't win the 4,000 € bonus, but they don't know that. Only Prince
and John know. The others are trying their best to get Jantien to
the other side, because for each person they get 1,000 €. Jantien
starts and Ellen guides her with the megaphone. She has to stop and wait.
Prince and John are standing below them, watching. Prince:"If
she doesn't make it, we're going to cheer! Because then we succeeded in our
challenge. And we didn't even have to do anything."
Jantien can continue, but her heart rate is too high after three
steps and she's got to wait again.
CC
Jantien:"I had to concentrate very much. I thought about my son
to get my heart rate down and I was looking straight in front of me."
She can continue again, but then has to wait. There's 10 seconds left, but she makes it to the other side in time.
CC
Prince:"John was convinced that only 5 would get to the other
side and I trusted him, but all six of them made it. We just didn't
succeed."
Everyone has made it, so they win 6,000 €. Prince and John have to explain that they missed out on the bonus. They have a total of 38,500 €
CC
George:"John and Prince thought I wouldn't do it, which is
weird, because I did go from the dam and that was much more scary. And now they
said I wouldn't do it. No bonus. She should have thought about it better."
Ellen:"I'm wondering about the roles John and Prince had
because they could have made a wrong prediction on purpose to get that
exemption."
John:"No, there weren't any Mole actions today I think."
Suspicions
Prince:"Ellen is my Mole. She has a good view of the group and can
easy manipulate in it." flashback
Harry and Ellen at the backpack
challenge. Harry:"Shouldn't we just say
no?" Ellen:"No."
John:"Karen is The Mole. It's very obvious. She even
said so herself." flashback Karen:"Exactly and this is
totally wrong. Totally wrong. And
I'm going to leave! I won't participate in this! They will have to make do
without a Mole!"
Ellen:"I think John is The Mole. Because he doesn't
always tell us everything and I see something sneaky in him. He is able to
sabotage without anyone noticing it." flashback
John:"I think 5 people will make it
to the other side." Prince:"All 6." John:"No,
5."
Jantien:"I don't think Harry is The Mole. I think some
people are onto Karen as The Mole, but I can't imagine that. I think Ellen is
The Mole."
Harry:"Karen still is The Mole for me for a while. Other
moles could be Ellen, maybe even George. I don't know what to think about
Kerstin. I've trusted Jantien up to now, but she would be a great Mole. I don't
really know." flashback
Jantien:"Iin the beginning I kept on asking 'Who can hear
me? Can anyone hear me?' but I didn't get a reply."
George:"I'm strongly suspecting Jantien. I don't think
it's John. He didn't do any Mole actions, he wouldn't be a good one. Prince is a
double guy, so I'm going for Jantien and Prince."
Kerstin:"Karen is still The Mole too me. I have no doubts
about that since day 1. She's got everything a Mole needs." flashback
Karen:"I heard a lot of talking of the others. My reception wasn't
very good apparently and I was always drown out by you when we were talking
together."
Karen:"There are more people who are making themselves
look suspicious. John's possible, Ellen's possible, Kerstin's possible. The sum
of all the small things makes me think it's Jantien."
Suspicious in this episode
Jantien
and Karen didn't cooperate well.
John told the others to listen carefully when they would hear the phone.
But if the phone rang, it would already be too late.
Harry and Ellen had 2 questions wrong.
John and Prince made a wrong prediction.
Kerstin wasted a lot of time.
Jantien went over the ropes and lost the bonus that way.
Karen keeps on yelling through the megaphone.
Elimination
Who will have to go?
