Episode 8

The final contestants, the final days, the final challenges.

Day 15
Edinburgh
This is a typical Scottish challenge. The contestants are standing on top of a tower and watch three pipebands playing a Scottish song on their bagpipes and marching around on a grassfield. Each contestant will have to become drum major of a group. This means that they will have to lead the pipeband. On the grassfield there are 2 yellow flags, 2 red and 2 blue ones. The drum major has to guide his pipeband over the field and collect the flags of their colour. The three pipebands walk in different patterns. The song takes 3 minutes and at the end, they have to back at the place they started in the middle of the circle. They can watch one time how to do it and then they are taught what to do to make the group turn and go to the place they want it to. Yvonne has to collect the red flags, Nico the yellow ones and Sigrid the blue. With some kind of stick they have to turn to the directions or twirl it to let the group do something else, etc... The pipebands start to play and the contestants start marching. Well, actually Sigrid is dancing more than marching, Nico walks out of time of the music and Yvonne keeps on shouting to the other two:"Keep on walking!! Keep on walking!!" At a certain point, Nico turns and walks away. When he looks back, he sees his band isn't following him, so he hurries back in front of the group. They have all collected their flags and have to go back to the starting points. Sigrid meets Yvonne's group. Yvonne:"Just walk through me!" And so the two pipebands cross each other. This works out perfectly. In the end, Sigrid has step aside a bit to pass the last bagpipe player. They arrive back at the beginning on time. The real drum majors are impressed. They win 7.500 gilders.

<Confession: Yvonne:"I really enjoyed. I saw the other two hop around and I really had to laugh! I felt really good in my suit and all. I really enjoyed it! I will never have that again." End of confession>

Final diner
It's their final dinner tonight. Tomorrow they will have to do their last challenge.
Yvonne:"It has become very important to me that I have to expand my horizon. I found out that the people I have been with the last few days, that there is so much more that I don't know anything about, like certain genre of music or books, series on tv or movies... Then I think 'There's so much more you can know." A bit of generel development. That's what I mean with expanding my horizon. I found that that horizon was smaller than I thought..."

Sigrid:"Of course I'd like to win, but I have to be honest, if I don't win, I will have won a lot for myself by being in it so long and having done such great things. It's already an award for me.The money itself isn't that important to me. It would be fun, but I don't think it would change my life a lot." (Note: the money they can win is not as much as in USA)

Nico:"We're not talking about the money at all. Yvonne keeps it. It has become a nice amount, so I will do my best to make sure I win it. I think Yvonne will vote for me, so there's a great chance that I'm the winner."

Yvonne:'I could really need it to make a few logic steps in my life."

Sigrid:"I would go shopping and buy things I wanted to buy for a long time. But without... I mean it's not that much. I can't quit my job and live on the investments or anything. I think I will have the same friends if I won't win it."

Nico:"I'd like to do something for my parents. My mother has a brother in Canada. It would be great if I could send her over there and there are some things that need to be done in the house. So actually, the money will be spent even before I have it. We'll see tomorrow. I'm curious, but I think I have good chance at winning."

Day 16
Edinburgh
Today they can win 7.500 gilders. Each contestant has to do a different assignment for 2.500 gilders. Sigrid has to guide a bus of tourists. At the end of the ride, she has to have at least 0.5 pounds for each tourist. Nico has to offer people to solve any question they have by using the internet and earn 10 pounds with it. Yvonne has to draw a caricature and sell it for 5 pounds. On tv we see everything mixed, but I'll write every challenge apart, because else it will be difficult to follow.

Sigrid is taken to her bus. There is another guide, who gives all the explanation. Sigrid translates it in Dutch and tries French too. She tells about a university, where famous people have studied medicine. About a dog that waited 21 days at the grave of his boss and about Sean Connery.
Guide:"To the left we have a stunning view of the entire Royal Mile." Sigrid says in Dutch:"To the left you can see the cranes the royal family uses to go bungeejumping. Each member has its own crane." She just starts telling funny and weird things. Two people laugh, but the rest just doesn't understand her.
Guide:"...you have a superb view on the top."
Sigrid in Dutch:"To the left you see some grass. They have to do some work about it, because it's getting brwon and rather boring."
Finally she also says in Dutch that she has to make sure she gets money from the people, but that it will be difficult, because most people didn't understand her.
And she's right. All passengers leave the bus without paying her.

Nico is asking people if they have a question for him. He has a stand with a laptop and a large sign saying "EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW, DR. NICO" He hasn't got a lot of succes though, because people avoid him. A few minutes later he has found a man who might be interested. At first he declines, but then Nico says:"Because you're my first victim, I will make a special offer. You only have to pay 1 pound instead of 2." The man is interested and asks his question. We don't see him asking it, though. The next shot we hear Nico say:"I think the answer to your questionis that there is no information on the internet about your girlfriend." Man:"Oh, I'm happy about that!" Nico:"That'll be one pound."
A few minutes later he finds a woman, who is prepared to pay him 2 pounds if he can find Bed & Breakfast hotels in the neighbourhood.
Again some minutes later he tells a girl:"I'm almost finished. I only need 2 more pounds. So could you ask me a question for 2 pounds?" Girl:"Is that all?" Nico:"You would really help me out with it." Girl:"Ok... errr... How high is the Eifel Tower?" Nico starts searching. A few minutes later, the girl says:"I've really got to go or I'm gonna be late. Do you want the money?" Nico:"No, because I didn't answer your question."
The next shot we see is of a woman who says:"Yeah, they're supposed to originate from Rome. That's what I've heard. So here's your 2 pounds." So Nico has earned 10 pounds. His challenge is a succes.

Yvonne asks some people if she can draw them. Most people don't want her. "It's a pity, because I can draw pretty well!" A few metres away there's a bagpipe player trying to earn some money too. After a while she goes and asks the man if she can draw him. The man thinks for a while and asks how long it will take. "Just a few minutes" The bagpipe player agrees and Yvonne starts drawing him. "If you're running out of time, you let me know, OK?" After a while she is finished and sells it to the man for 5 pounds. Her challenge has succeeded too.

So Nico and Yvonne succeeded and Sigrid didn't. They win 5.000 gilders, which brings the total amount of the kitty to 70.000 gilders.

Angela:"You can now prepare for the test. After that we will see who is the winner, who will be the loser and who is the Mole..."

The last hour before the test
Nico:"I've made all 7 tests correct up til now, so it would be very surprising if I get a blackout now or anything."

Sigrid:"Now that the final test is arriving, I'm also gonna trust my memory. I'm not gonna think of a new strategy, because up til now I made it thhis way. I hope my memory won't let me down."

Yvonne:"I'm extremely nervous. I did write down some things about my Mole, but I don't know if it's enough. I'm doubting a lot."

Sigrid:"Yvonne is a very great opponent to me. She has written everything down and I just have to get round with my memory."

Suspicious
Nico walked the wrong way for a while.
Sigrid crossed Yvonne's group. Did she want to let it fail in the end?
Sigrid didn't manage to succeed in her challenge.

Final questionnaire
Sigrid:"The Mole is Nico..."

Sigrid:"I noticed Nico wanted to continue. I saw he didn't participate in the discussion whether they should stop or not. I noticed he wanted to continue. I felt something like 'I'm on to you!' "

Flashback Episode 2 The raft building challenge. Everyone is peddling, but Nico isn't very active.
Sigrid:"At the raft building I was looking around and I thought he was peddling the wrong way. Not that it mattered a lot, but it was funny to see he was trying to do some sabotaging."
"I'm always getting more certain. The pattern is in my head."

With the taptoe challenge, the Mole was:
- dancing

Nico"I still think, and actually I'm sure of it, that Sigrid is the Mole."
Flashback Sigrid's group crosses Yvonne's group.
Nico:"Today she tried to ruin the entire challenge by crossing Yvonne's group. It was amiracle it worked out well."

The polaroid challenge failed because the Mole sabotaged by:
- reading the map
- solving cryptic clues
- win time

Flashback Episode 6 Sigrid:"I'm a bit crypto-tired." Nico:"Crypto-tired?" Sigrid:"I really don't know what to do with this!"

Was the Mole active in the abseiling challenge?

Flashback Episode 3 Sigrid abseils down. Dan opens a box with money in it.
Nico:"Sigrid eventually did go down. Dan was very lucky, because both boxes contained money. I think it was a conscious choice of her to get Dan out of the game."
Flashback Episode 3 Dan:"That's when you have a free choice. If it's wrong, it's wrong. That's when you get an honest chance!" Sigrid:"How do we know you're not the Mole, Dan?"
Nico:"That's why I think she's the Mole, because Sigrid was tired of Dan's dominant behaviour."

Yvonne:"Who is the Mole? To me it still is Nico and I won't change my mind about it."

Why did the hot air balloon challenge fail?
- bad GSM network
- too much wind

Flashback Episode 4 Nico:"Nazife? Nazife? Na... Nazife?"
Yvonne:"We tried many times to get in contact with the guys. We constantly got an engaged tone and I don't believe the network is that bad. I know it's bad, but... it makes me think why we couldn't get hold of them the first ten minutes."

What did the Mole do in the fortress challenge?

Flashback Episode 6 A helicoptre flies over the fortress. Doortje and Nico look up.
Yvonne:"With the fortress challenge he was one of the first that got shot. But... you can never verify his story. I have no arguments to stop suspecting him, but I haven't seen things that confirm my choice either. Nico still is the Mole for me."

Edinburgh Castle
Sigrid:"During the whole period in Scotland I focused on Nico. I'm just absolutely sure it's him."
Yvonne:"You can write as much as you want, but I still feel it wasn't enough."
Sigrid:"Suppose I get a red screen... then I have just been enormously wrong!"
Nico:"At this moment I'm not sure of anything anymore. The only thing I'm sure of is that the Mole is a woman."

One by one they enter the castle and one by one they enter the room, where Angela is already waiting for them.

"Dear Sigrid, dear Yvonne and dear Nico. The game is played. In a few moments we will know who the winner is, who the loser is and... who the Mole is."
She types in Yvonne's name and presses ENTER. Click her picture to see which screen Yvonne got.
