Dutch Mole 4
Episode 5

Aafke knew least about who The Mole was and got eliminated. She was the first woman to be sent home. Seven contestants remained.

Quebec - Canada
A black gloved hand plays the instructions tape again:"Hi Mole. You now know who suspects you. Don't panick, because it would be very weird if no one would suspect you." flashback Interview Chandrika - Patricia: Chandrika:"Are you The Mole?" Patricia:"No... euhm.. I'm not The Mole." Also a flashback of Rene finding the money. "The past few days they won a lot of money for the group pot. That doesn't matter, because they will probably lose that again the next days. At the end of the first every will get together again and you know where. The next days you might have to make a personal sacrifice, because some people can phone home. If you don't do that, it's easier to sabotage. However, a Mole is only human. Decide for yourself what you do with it. Keep up with the good work! You're halfway!"

Day 10 - Duchesnay
They all wake up in their tents in the snowy forest. They wash themselves in a nearby creek.

Ferdi:"I miss my girlfriend and my dog a lot. The days go so fast, you're always moving and in full action. But when you're lying in your bed and all is quiet, you start thinking about those things."
Ron:"You're together with people who are all nice, but you can only trust them to a certain degree."
Chandrika:"If it's a bit tough, or these a difficult challenge or you're not feeling ok, those are the moments you think of home."
Elise:"It's weird. Knowing that life at home is continuing and we're all in a game, outside life. Very strange feeling."

Quebec
They are having breakfast in some kind of pub or restaurant as the host arrives. She tells them they have to divide into a male and female group. Then she points at Astrid and says:"And I'm taking you with me!" Astrid stands up and they go away immediately. The other contestants are slightly upset. Ferdi tells the others:"It's so weird how it feels when someone is taken away all of a sudden." Patricia:"Yeah and it all happens so fast."

Astrid:"I didn't like being separated from the group. One of the disadvantages is that I can't keep an eye on my Mole anymore. I can't do my job anymore. I can't search my Mole. That's really annoying."

The male group is taken to Jean-Larose Falls. It's a very cold stream in the forest with a lot of waterfalls. The men have to find 5 cylinders somewhere in the waterfalls. Each cylinder contains a question. Two of the men have to try and find the cylinders. The other guy has to call the women to tell the question. The women have to go find the answer to those questions and in the end they will all have to get together at a secret location. They get 3 hours to do so.

Rene and Ron decided to go in the waterfalls to find the cylinders.

Ron:"Rene immediately raised his hand to go into the water. Ferdi and I were doubting about what we wanted to do, so we decided to toss for it to see who would go along with Rene."
Rene:"When we arrived at the location for the challenge it seemed like you were at a movie set of 'The Fellowship of the Ring'. There was mist over the water, the forest aroudn it, you saw icicles everywhere. You could expect to see an Orc any time."

Ferdi will call the women to tell them the questions.
The women are still in the pub, waiting for Ferdi to call them with questions. Every question leads them to a new location. The challlenge is successful if all of them arrive at the final location.
Rene finds the first cylinder.

Ferdi:"Rene and Ron were searching the cylinders and I had to take those from them and call the women with the question. They were in town with a car. With the clues I called they could find a location to a place we were nearby at."

Mont-Saint-Anne
Astrid walks up a hill to an old wooden shed.
CC
Astrid:"I got taken away from the group and was invited to go to a certain place. I walked up that hill and I really felt... I was wondering what would happen to me. I found it very exciting. I arrived in a shed where a proposition was made to me of which I was very impressed."

She finds a portable player and presses play to watch the tape. The host appears:"Dear Astrid. In this box I will put the money your team mates can win in the challenge: 7,000 €. But you can also win this money if you decide to leave the game tomorrow. If you do, you get the box and the money in it. The others won't win anything with their challenge today. They don't know that, because they're still trying to let the challenge succeed. But even if they don't win, you can still get the money. That is, if you leave the game tomorrow before the elimination takes place. Until then you get the time to think it over. Good luck!"

Ferdi calls the first question to Patricia: Who founded the city of Quebec? Elise asks the owner of the pub, who tells her it's Champlain.
The final location the contestants have to go to is near the place Astrid was taken to. The host is already there and the women call her saying the answer is Champlain. The host tells them to go to 'Rue du Petit Champlain'. Patricia:"And what do we have to do there?" Host:"You'll see." Patricia:"OK thank you."
The girls go to the first address, where they can find the answer to the next question. The correct answer leads them to another address to find the answer to another question until they reach the final destination. They have 2 hours and 27 minutes left.
Patricia is driving. Elise tells her where to go:"Drive along this road and at the end we arrive at a hotel where we have to go" Chandrika:"Right!" Elise:"Left, we have to go left."
Patricia:"We have to look at the map. I can't drive and look at the map at the same time!"

Ron and Rene are rapelling down a waterfall. In the waterfall is one of the cylinders. Rene pushes it out and it falls in the water, Ron (who's already down the waterfall) quickly jumps in the water and grabs it.

Ferdi:"We were supposed to find those cylinders in the correct order. At least, I had to phone the questions in the correct order, which was very important."

Rene and Ron come to the conclusion that they missed on cylinder.
CC
Ferdi:"They found the first one and next they got the third cylinder. So we had to go back to look for the second one."
Rene:"You really had to watch in every tiny hole and under every rock. You walk past it very quickly, because you have so many things on your mind."
Ron:"So we had to go back to find the second cylinder and we wanted to start searching from the point where we foudn the first one, but we didn't know where that was anymore. So we walked back a bit too much."

The girls are still driving. Elise:"OK so we can't go straight ahead here, so we have to go left." Patricia:"No I can still go straight ahead!" Elise:"Oh then we have to go straight ahead until we can't anymore and we have to go left there."

Patricia:"Well, there were some things that went wrong, but I wanted to keep an eye on Chandrika, which I did. I took care of the phone and we made sure that either Elise wrote instructions down or Chandrika, but if she wrote anything down, I checked it."
Chandrika:"I really felt it was a pity that I was goofing aroudn with two women in a car."

They arrive at the location and walk down an alley with restaurants. Rene has foudn the 2nd cylinder at the waterfalls and Ferdi calls the question in it to the girls: Which nationality did the dock workers have who came to this neighbourhood in the 19th century?
Elise and Chandrika  ask a man, who tells them most of the dock workers were from Ireland. They thank him and then the man starts talking in Dutch:"You're from Holland! I have friends there who live in Den Haag and I know Holland very well." The girls are anxious to continue though, because the chit-chat is costing time. Elise:"Well you speak Dutch very well, but we're in a hurry, so... thank you! Bye!"
Patricia calls the host and tells her the nationality is Irish, which is correct and they get a new address: Chez Marie, 8706, Avenue Royale.

Astrid:"I have no idea what the others are doing at the moment. I think they are doing a challenge with which they can win a lot of money and I can go away with that money. I think they won't like it if I do that."
"I'm almost sure that I escaped the red screen by jumping off the bridge." flashback of episode 3: Astrid jumps from the bridge. No one gets eliminated. "So I have a weak spot in the game, but on the other side I have the chance to step out the game and take home some money, so in a way I feel I don't have much choice. I could really use the money. It's really tough."

Ferdi calls the girls for third question: Which season is Maple Syrup time?
The girls drive to the third address while the guys try to find the fourth cylinder.
Elise and Chandrika go ask a woman about the question. She tells them it's in spring time. And so they get their next address: Basilica de St. Anne. They try to find the address on the map. Patricia also tells the girls that she wants to answer the phone and no one else.
They have an hour and 19 minutes left and Ferdi calls for the 4th question: In this basilica you can find a copy of a statue made by Michelangelo. What's the statue's name?
So the girls drive to the basilica...

Elise:"I was explaining Patricia she had to go left, but she drove straight ahead. So she said 'Oh hang on, I'll turn the car.' and then she drove on a terrain which was very muddy to turn the car. And we got stuck in the mud. I thought it was a really strange action."

Patricia drives on the terrain, but instead of reversing back on the other lan, she makes a big turn on the terrain and gets stuck in the mud.
Elise:"I don't know if this was a smart thing to do."
Patricia:"I don't think so either."
They laugh. Elise:"Are you serious?" Patricia:"Yes, I'm stuck. Really."

They have an hour and 9 minutes left. Ron and Rene are still rapelling down some waterfalls. They find the last cylinder, which they have to open when they are reunited with the girls.
The girls have arived at the basilica and Elise and Chandrika run inside the basilica, but Patricia is still outside.

Elise:"Patricia immediately ran to the information desk, but Chandrika and me wanted to spread our chances, so we already went into the basilica."
Patricia:"I had quickly found the name, but then I had to go find Elise and Chandrika to get back quickly, because we had a time limit."

Patricia enters the basilica and meets Elise. Patricia:"I've already got it!! Why did you two run away?! I don't understand this! Come on, let's go!"
But where's Chandrika?

Elise:"And then Chandrika turned out to be somewhere downstairs in the basement somewhere, so we had to go find her first."

Patricia calls the host and tells her the answer is 'Pieta'. The have to go to the final location: the skilifts at Mont Ste. Anne, where they will meet the guys.
CC
Elise:"We met the guys at the final address and there we opened the final cylinder which contained the question 'What is a Sugar...' something in French."

Question 5: What's the French name for Sugar Shack?
They think it's a kind of snack or a drink. Patricia suddenly runs back to the car.
The others go ask someone, who tells them it's a place where they make sugar from Maple Syrup. Ferdi:"OK, then we know it. Patricia has to call Angela (=the host)!"

Patricia calls and says it's 'Cabin à Sucre'. The host tells her to go to a pick-up truck on the parking lot, which has its headlights turned on. They run to it and get in. They have 17 minutes left. The pick-up truck brings them somewhere.

Ferdi:"We were taken up the ski run and halfway we arrived at the Sugar Shack."
Chandrika:"We saw a small shed. At first we were afraid we had to spend the night there, but that wasn't the case, luckily. In the shed was a small tv and we saw Astrid on it."

Astrid appears on the screen:"Dear fellow-contestants, I'll call you by name, Ron, Rene, Ferdi, Chandrika, Elise and Patricia. You are now doing a challenge with which you can win 7,000 €. I have the money at the moment. I'm curious to find out whether you have succeeded in the challenge. I'll assure that the money is safe in my hands. I'll see you tomorrow!"

The contestants don't know what is going on. Chandrika:"Tomorrow? Huh?"
CC
Ron:"Something's going on, but we don't know what. That's not really great."
Elise:"I'm very curious as to what she is doing... She's got 7,000 € for us... very strange..."

Quebec
They have dinner at a restaurant and make a toast to Astrid.
CC
Patricia:"It seems as though the six of us are left, which is weird, because we didn't have that fourth elimination round yet."
Ron:"I think she might have been offered an exemption. Or maybe something's wrong and she wants to go home, but if that's the case, I think we would have noticed something was wrong earlier on."
Rene:"It's frustrating that my Mole isn't with us during these challenges because I can't keep an eye on her and it will be difficult for me to answer some questions in the questionnaire."

Astrid has dinner at her hotel:"At this moment, five more contestants have to be eliminated until the final round. I might as well be one of those contestants, which means I'd be sent home without any money. So that's why I'm seriuously considering to take the money and leave."
"I'm really curious to know what they are doing and what they think I'm doing and what's happening to me."

The host arrives at the restaurant and asks two people: a man and a woman.

Rene and Elise volunteer. They go outside and the host tells them they have to arrange sleeping arrangements for six people. They get one hour to do so. If they fail, they get the address of an inn which they will have to pay for themselves.
The others are taken to 'Chez Dagobert'. When they go inside they see a lot of people (mostly older people) line dancing. Patricia starts laughing and can't stop laughing.

Ferdi:"We went inside and I saw all those cowboy hats and I thought 'Oh no, this is going to happen.' and it did happen."
Ron:"And yes, we had to go linedancing and that's something I would normally never ever do!"

The host tells them the other two are trying to arrange a place to sleep. During that one hour, they have to try and study a linedancing act. If they do it well, they win 2,500 €. While the host is explaining it to them, Patricia is already encouraging Ferdi and Ron to participate.

Patricia:"See, I find linedancing very dull and Ron and Ferdi didn't want to do it and didn't want the money."

They decide to do it anyway.
Rene and Elise enter a hotel and explain the receptionist that they need a place to sleep and that they are willing to clean and do the dishes for it. Rene is not talking. The only thing he was told to do was just smile. The receptionist doesn't want to help them though. So they go to another hotel and explain the lady at the front desk about their assignment. Lady:"I feel like I'm being fooled here. I don't believe you haven't got any money with you." Elise empties all her pockets to show her she really doesn't have any money.
Lady:"OK, so you're participating in a tv show..." Elise:"Yes, and we have an assignment." Lady:"What is 'an assignment' again?"
They explain again. Lady:"I can't allow six people to sleep here without paying. I have a supervisor who's at Château Loriet. I can't decide on it. You have to go there and ask for Richard Chenier."

The others have started their linedancing lessons.
CC
Ron:"I found myself very silly on the dancefloor there and the only thing I could think of was 'Get me out of here as fast as possible!' "
Ron has paired up with Patricia and Ferdi is dancing with Chandrika.
CC
Ferdi:"The group has become smaller and Chandrika is my Mole. It was quite funny I was dancing with her. It felt like I was in league with the enemy! It remains a game."

Rene and Elise have reached Château Loriet meanwhile and meet Richard Chenier. They give him a hand and say hello, but then the man says he doesn't want to be filmed. He's not authorising it and so they leave.
They ask around in the street and find a guy who has a big van with 7 seats.
CC
Elise:"I was getting desperate and I talked to someone in the street who wanted to lend us his car with 7 seats we could sleep in, so I wrote down his phone number and I said I hoped we wouldn't need his assistance. And then afterwards we went into a hotel, which looked very rich, so I thought it wouldn't work."

The two go into the rich and expensive hotel and tell the receptionist about their assignment and the fact that they don't have any money, but would like to clean. The woman tells them to wait a while "Just a second, I will verify what I can do for you. I'll call my supervisor and will see what I can do."
She gets back after a few minutes and says:"Done deal! I only need a print of a credit card. No charge will be done on it."
Elise:"OK, we'll be back in half an hour! Bye!"
Elise and Rene hug each other and run out of the hotel cheering. Then they go to the pub where the others are doing the line dance.
The others have been practicing for an hour and Linda (the instructor) will now judge whether they know how to dance well. So now they dance for real. For the money.

Ron:"We had to do a line dance and that's something I'd normally never ever do. No matter which dance I have to do actually, because I don't like standing on the dancefloor and have people look and stare at me. So this was the biggest challenge for me in 'De Mol' up to now. But it's over and I survived. I can handle everything now!"

They win and now have 28,400 € in the group pot.
The host asks Rene and Elise what their result is for the sleeping arrangements. Elise:"Well, I can tell you I've got the phone number of a man who can lend us his car which has 7 seats. So we could sleep there."
The others are a bit disappointed.
Elise:"However... [cheers] We got a hotel room for the six of us!!"
They're all dancing in the disco and having fun.
CC
Rene:"It's a pity Astrid isn't with us, because she's very enjoyable."
Elise:"In the disco [where they did the line dance] I felt she had to be there, because she would have liked it a lot. It was a pity."
Chandrika:"I think Astrid now has a luxurious hotel. I think she needed it. I think it's something like that. She probably has some kind of challenge too. Could be she already did something today or maybe she has to do something tomorrow. We'll see."

...

Astrid is sitting near an open fire and is drinking some wine. Alone...
CC
Astrid:"What I will miss most when I leave? As funny as it may sound, I'd miss the game, the group all the weird twists. I'm very curious to know how this game ends. I will miss the feeling that I have a chance to win a big amount of money. And I will also miss Canada. It's a beautiful country."

Day 11 - Quebec
The contestants awake in their luxurious hotel room.
Astrid is already up and jogging around in the big city. She has breakfast in a fast-food restaurant. Alone again.

Astrid:"I have to make the decision tonight whether I leave with 7,000 € or continue playing the game where I might win the entire group pot. I have to start all over, find a new Mole and concentrate very well. Of course I do have a shot at it, but I think I'm very behind compared to the others. I find it very difficult. The game gets cut off for me quite abruptly."

...

The host meets the contestants (apart from Astrid). She asks if they slept well and whether Ron had any nightmares about the line dance. He says he didn't, but that it was the biggest challenge of his life.
Host:"I was wondering whether you guys were homesick?" Some say they are a bit homesick from time to time.
Host:"I've got a challenge with which you can win minutes to phone home. But that's only for four of you! Two people have to sacrifice themselves. Who will it be?"

Ron and Chandrika sacrifice themselves, they have to go somewhere else, where they will get their instructions. They go to Château Frontenac into a room next to a big other room. Moments later, the other four contestants arrive and enter the room next to Ron and Chandrika without knowing the other two are there.

The four play the game 'Ik ga op reis en ik neem mee' (I'm going on a trip and I'm bringing along a --- ). Each contestant has to say something he/she takes along on a trip. The next one has to repeat the previous items that were summed up and add a new one to the list. But the new word they add has to start with the last letter of the previous word. The person that loses first, can phone home for 2 minutes, the next one gets 4 minutes, the third one gets 6 minutes and the winner gets 8 minutes to phone home.
Ron and Chandrika are in the other room and can watch the four. If they can collect all items that are mentioned, they can win 2,000 €.
I will write the words in Dutch here, because the next word has to begin with the last letter of the previous word. The translation is between brackets.
Elise begins:"I'm going on a trip and I'm bringing along a... yoga matje (yoga mat)"
Rene laughs and is next:"I'm going on a trip and I'm bringing along a yoga matje and erwtensoep (pea soup)."
Patricia:"I'm going on a trip and I'm bringing along a yoga matje, erwtensoep (pea soup) and pyama (pyamas)."
Ferdi adds 'aardappel' (potato)
Ron and Chandrika are writing all the words down carefully, because they have to go find the items the four others take along on their trip.

Chandrika:"It immediately started with a yoga mat from Elise. Ron and I, we looked at each other and thought 'Hmm this is going to be difficult!' "

Elise has added lepelaar (a kind of water bird. Watch a picture of it by clicking here).
Rene then adds a rammelaar (rattle for a baby), Patricia adds 'ring', Ferdi adds 'glass', Elise then adds 'slabak' (a dish to put lettuce in). Rene adds 'kaars' (candle). Patricia goes for 'slang' (snake) and Ferdi adds a 'grijper' (gripper). Elise then names 'roodborstje' (a bird: robin, redbreast).
From then on we hear a mix of all four naming all items through each other and it ends with Elise:"... and euhmm... doornroosje (the fairy tale figure 'Sleeping Beauty')"

Elise:"I was naming very explicit things such as a lepelaar, a tovenaar (wizard) so that it rhymed and I got remember it better."

Another round has passed we hear Rene saying "Een laars (a boot)" and we hear Elise adding another word:"Euhmm... a pike?"

Rene:"I found it quite a tough game because we kept on getting further in the game and after a while you just can't remember the words anymore."

Rene is stuck and can't come up with any word anymore. He's the first one out and gets 2 minutes to phone home. The others continue. Ron and Chandrika still observing them.
CC
Ron:"They started naming such weird things. I didn't understand it at all! I thought they would say things like shampoo and a toothbrush and that kind of stuff and that I could just get it out of my own backpack. The Mole couldn't do much. The only thing she could have done to make it as difficult as possible to us, was to name something which is impossible to find."

Patricia adds 'eikel' (acorn or also Dutch abusive slang for dickhead). They all laugh. Chandrika too:"This is bad!"
Ferdi makes a mistake. He says 'glass' instead of 'gripper' and is the second one out and gets 4 minutes. Only Elise and Patricia are left. Elise succeeds and it's Patricia's turn. She adds a nerts (mink) to the items.
Chadrika and Ron laugh.
We hear another item named: a dinner table. Then Patricia makes a mistake. She gets 6 minutes and Elise 8.
Ron and Chandrika get 60 minutes to go find the mink, the lepelaar and 35 other items. They go to some restaurants and hotels. They get some things for free, other stuff they have to bring back.
They find a wizard (a puppet on strings) but aren't allowed to take it with them.

Meanwhile, the four call home. Rene is first:"Hi, it's me! I've got 2 minutes to call you."
CC
Rene:"I liked having the opportunity to talk to my wife. It was emotional. She started crying because I missed her and I miss her too. Very emotionally charged minutes. I couldn't talk that much with her, but it affects you in a way. It was difficult."
Ferdi:"I could phone home 4 minutes, which affected me a lot. She was quite upset only because of the fact that I was on the phone, I guess she didn't expect that."

Ferdi on the phone:"I think we both underestimated it. I find it very difficult too. *sighs* ... I know who it is already, from day one! I'm just waiting... I think if more people are on to the same Mole it'll come down to knowledge about the Mole and I think my knowledge is quite well, so I expect to be in the final round."

The host comes to the four and tells them Ron and Chandrika have to collect the items they named. They all start laughing. Host:"And that's quite difficult for them, expecially because of Elise's and Patricia's lists. However, you can help them. They don't have to go collect the items you named, but in order to do so, you can't phone home."
CC
Elise:"I doubted about whether I would do it. But Ferdi and PAtricia immediately said not to do it."

Ferdi:"I wouldn't do that. Just enjoy your minutes to phone home." Rene:"Then we just don't get any money."
CC
Patricia:"You already had the promise that you could phone home and it's difficult to step away from it then. The other two guys had already phoned home and they told us not to let it slip. I was glad to hear that."

Patricia has 6 minutes to phone home. No one answers though...
Elise talks to her boyfriend. She has a nice chat about the game and stuff.
Ron and Chandrika arrive. The host asks them some items. They have a potato, a very big yoga mat, pea soup (fresh from a restaurant in a cup!) a picture of a wizard in a fairy tale book, two very small candles, a big tv set and a lots of more stuff. The host asks if they have an 'eikel' (acorn or slang for dickhead) and Chandrika points at Ron! Everyone laughs. The host lets it count. She then asks for a dinner table and Chandrika points at the table the others are sitting around. But they don't have a mink and several other things and failed to win 2,000 €. The pot sticks at 28,400 €.

Suspicions
Rene:"We're missing Astrid for two days now already. Yesterday morning during breakfast she was taken away. It could be some kind of Mole act, I don't know. But she still remains my number one suspect."
Elise:"Chandrika has her suspicious moments when she does something weird or does nothing it all. She sometimes gives inconsistent answers to some questions. I think I'm going for Chandrika as The Mole."
Ron:"From the first 30 seconds I saw Patricia I suspected her and saw her as The Mole." flashback Patricia suddenly runs back to the car. "Patricia... she ran back to the car yesterday because she 'had to do something there'..."
Patricia:"Yesterday in the basilica Chandrika tried to stall time. But I guess it was difficult for her because I was so nearby." flashback Chandrika has run into tha basements of the basilica and Patricia tells Elise to go find her. "Chandrika. Absolutely, yep. All the time up to know so I'm sticking to that."
Chandrika:"At this moment I haven't really seen anything. I'm voting on a Mole who's doing great work, so that doesn't make sense! *laughs*" flashback to episode 4. Patricia chops the log in 4 parts successfully. "But I do think it's her."
Ferdi:"The group has become smaller and Chandrika is my Mole. That rises some tensions, because you think through every word you say to each other."

In her hotel room, separated from the group, Astrid makes her questionnaire.
Astrid:"If I stay, I'm going to focus on Elise, because I think she's playing a very weird game, also concerning friendships in the group. And Patricia, because I find her a bit too playful in the group. So if I stay I'm going to keep an eye on those two." flashback  Astrid watches a tape in the Sugar Shack and sees the host:"But you can also win this money if you decide to leave the game tomorrow." "The elimination takes place in about an hour. I have thought and doubted a lot. But I have to make a decision and I think I know my decision by know."

Suspicious in this episode
Why did the host explicitly choose Astrid for the money offer whereas at other times, the contestants themselves can appoint someone?
The guys missed the second cylinder and had to go back, wasting time.
Patricia wanted to turn the car on a muddy terrain and got stuck.
Chandrika and Elise ran into the basilic, while the answer was easily found by Patricia at the information desk. Then they wasted time having to search Chandrika in the basilic's basements.
Both Patricia and Elise named very strange items to 'take along on a trip'. They didn't hand back their phone minutes, causing Ron and Chandrika to fail the challenge.

Elimination
The 6 contestants arrive and sit down. One chair remains empty... Astrid's chair.
Host:"Dear contestants, it's time again for another elimination. But as you can see, we're missing someone. Here she is."
They all look at the door and Astrid walks in and sits down on the empty chair. Some contestants say things like "Hi!" "It's such a long time ago." "Where have you been all that time?" Astrid just smiles.
