Belgian Mole (part 1)

Episode 9

So Magda was the Mole all along. Hugo knew it and he won the money. Everybody meets each other again to look at the final episode. The others still don't know who the Mole is.

But there still are some questions left: How did the Mole work? Which sabotages did she do? Who was on the right track? How could you know who it was?

How could you know?
If you paid attention carefully, you could know the Mole after a few episodes. The contestants that had to go sometimes told who they suspected. In the first episode we hear Dimi say:"I think Belle is the Mole." But he has to go home, so we can be sure that she wasn't the Mole.

During the karaoke evening in episode 2, Anke said:"There's something about Hugo that I haven't got with the others." And in her confession she said:"My first choice is Hugo." But she had to go. So it wasn't Hugo.

Reggy, Moniek and Sylvie didn't say who they suspected. But in episode 6 Belle said:"Mon, but I don't want him to be the mole. He's too sweet." And she had to go home. So Mon was probably not the Mole.

So Guy and Magda were the only possible Moles left. But in episode 7, Guy had to leave. So you could know the Mole before the finale came. It was Magda.

Sabotages
Flashback episode 1: Magda:"Wow, yes we hear something!"
Magda:"In the orientation challenge I sabotaged Dimi's receiver. That wasn't very difficult, you only have to push the wrong button."
Belle:"Somebody has walked here..."
Belle:"In the first challenge Magda told me 'Dimi is bungling. Couldn't he be the Mole?' and she laughed about it."
Magda:"Why are you bungling like that?"
Magda:"And I reminded Dimi that Belle had had the receiver before."
Dimi:"So I started suspecting Belle and I thought she really had me there."

Flashback episode 2: The golf challenge. Magda:"Co-lis-tische?"
Magda:"With the question about the Greek columns I thought it was a great moment to strike. But I also took a great risk with that, because I was presented as travel guide."
Mon:"I couldn't understand that she didn't know that."
Hugo:"She could sabotage there without really turning suspicion on her."

Flashback episode 3: The challenge with the watches.
Magda:"With the watches I distracted everything a little."
Magda:"He (the jeweller)must be in the game, Mon."
Mon:"She tried to let me doubt there."
They're searching on the internet. Magda:"No, that's not exactly the same type."
Magda:"But we had to smash a watch, sp I asked Mon if I could do it. I smashed the false watch and like that I became less suspicious."

Flashback episode 4 Magda and Belle try to pour the milk in the bottles, but they are laughing a lot and spill a lot.
Magda:"I was deliberately pouring it next to the bottle and Moniek and Belle didn't even see it."
Belle:"I didn't see it, but after a while I was thinking 'I have milked so much now and that bottle isn't getting full.'"
Magda:"And in the pond we were supposed to plant the sticks of that fence they broke off, into the sand. But I didn't put it entirely in the sand."
Magda:"Wait a minute, this stick isn't right." and pulls it out.
Magda:"And the fish could easily swim under it."

Flashback episode 5: the castle with the riddles.
Hugo:"When we had to count the triangles, I couldn't function anymore. I wasn't relaxed."
Mon:"He was probably looking more at Guy and Magda instead of at the triangles."
Hugo:"She did say the right answer to me sometimes, but I just didn't hear her."
Magda:"Thirty?" Hugo stares ahead of him.
Hugo:"I had a big blackout."
Magda:"And I just let it happen. I only wanted the minutes to go away."
Hugo:"To me that was sabotage, just because of her presence."

Flashback episode 5 Mont Ventoux
Magda:"At the Mont Ventoux I fiddled with the acceleration of the bike."
Magda:"F*ck! Quick another bike!"

Hugo:"And I was sure that Magda's discipline was doomed to fail. Whichever discipline she would have, it would fail."
Flashback  episode 6 Magda misses the target at the archery challenge.
Mon:"But she told us that there was a lot of wind and that the other one had missed too. But that was something we couldn't check, because we weren't there."

Flashback episode 6 Michiel:"If you throw 1 to 3 you will have to paint your hair. If you throw 4 to 6 you will have to shave your hair off." Magda:"Are you crazy?" She throws the die and it's... a 1 !
Magda:"At that moment I asked if I could throw again, because it would be too obvious if I rejected having my hair painted. The cameracrew still didn't know who the Mole was. Because of the second throw, they did know and I got a few more friends in the plot."

Flashback  episode 2: A clock radio goes off at 3.00 a.m. with very loud music.
Magda:"There were some moments when it was very exciting. I tried to spoil the atmosphere by hanging letters on the door and writing messages on the mirror and things like that."
episode 4: Moniek finds a letter in the tent. 'There is only one Mole!'
Magda:"I tried to nag them a little bit."
episode 5: The message in the newspaper. 'How high is the Mont Ventoux?  The Mole'
episode 4: Sylvie and Hugo find a cassette in their car and listen to it. It's a distorted voice that says:"Am I a woman or a man?"

Paranoia
Who suspected who and why?
Reggy:"I am the Mole!"
Hugo:"Dimi."
Dimi:"Belle."
Magda:"At the moment I think it's Moniek."
Anke:"... of our friend Guy."
Guy:"Sylvie."
Reggy:"I think it's Anke."
Mon:"I have seen Hugo in Berchem (which is probably the place where the screening took place) with his wife and children. And I thought if he's in the game he must be the Mole."
Moniek:"Guy because he didn't introduce himself on the train."
Reggy:"With that car... if Anke isn't the Mole... Even Sneyers (an F1 racer) can't park his car like Anke did in the challenge."
Guy:"Sylvie... With the wine tasting challenge, that failed, I was probably the first one who could do a challenge together with the Mole."
Reggy:"And she's Koen Wouters' sister (a Belgian singer). Her name is 'van Beerendonck', she lives in Deurne. I've asked her. I even know her birthday."
Belle:"Magda definitely not. 100 % sure."

Different turns
Some challenges get a different turn now we know Magda's the Mole:

BENJI JUMPING:
Flashback  episode 2: We see somebody jumping off a bridge and Moniek nd Magda start screaming and yelling that they won't do that.
Hugo:"I already thought that the Mole would jump if a lot of people jumped."
Mon:"Reggy says that. The Mole jumps."
Flashback  Reggy:"Because else everybody will immediately suspect him to be the Mole if he doesn't jump. To sabotage the challenge."
Magda:"I really was scared so that was an advantage. And I brought up some arguments like..."
Flashback  Magda:"That something to lose your intestants with and to get a heartattack. Besides... your breathing... you can't survive it."
Hugo:"The fact that Magda was doubting was a real Mole action to me."
Magda:"I created doubt in the group. But then Anke decided to jump first and the rest slowly followed. And I was thinking how can I still sabotage this?"
Hugo:"And when Magda was about to jump, I started doubting again, because I thought why would she do such a thing?"
Magda:"And I won some time by getting on the ledge of the bridge and back off it."
Flashback  Magda:"No I can't, I'm afraid. I'm really scared."
Mon:"And I realised it when Magda saw that Belle and Reggy were also getting ready to jump. Then she must have thought uh oh, I have to jump or everything is lost."
Hugo:"Her intervention with Guy at the end was another indication for me."
Flashback  Guy:"I didn't think you would jump." Magda:"Me neither."
Magda:"When I was sure he wouldn't jump, I tried not to change his mind."
Flashback  Magda:"If you decide not to jump, it's all over. You don't have to do it for the group, but for yourself."

Magda's confession
DAY 1
I am the Mole. I think I will find it very hard when someone has to leave tomorrow.

DAY 3
It's a nice gang. The first days I felt like an intruder, but that's all over now.

DAY 6
I hated it when Reggy had to go, but that's what I chose for. I think it will be very hard to be the Mole the next days.

DAY 7
Yesterday I was walking alone and I was singing to myself 'I am the Mole, I am the Mole,...'

DAY 13
I miss Belle, because I'm all alone with those men.

DAY 14
The last execution has just happened. I'm tired, exhausted. The perfect finale would have been with Reggy and Belle. But I think it would have become a comical soap instead.

What you didn't know
Hugo has written EVERYTHING down what Magda did.
Hugo:"I really needed that. It supported me a lot. I can for instance tell you that on 26th October at the breakfast, Magda was sitting next to Mon and opposite of me. In the afternoon she drank coffee, and so on."

When they had to re-pack their luggage in the first episode, Mon underestimated the consequences of it.
Mon:"I thought we had to drag those heavy backpacks all day and at the end they would laugh at us and tell us that our luggage was still there. So I only packed one T-shirt, one underpants, one sweater and a toothbrush. That's why I wore the same T-shirt every episode. But it must have been easy for the viewers to recognize me."

The Interview
We didn't see the outcome of one challenge: The nightly interview. Who told Mon the challenge and why?
Magda:"I almost litterally told Mon would we had done."
Flashback  Mon:"What kind of challenge was it?" Magda:"We had to observe."
Magda:"I gave him a little bit of information."
Flashback  Mon:"So the three of you had to observe something." Magda:"Somebody."
Magda:"And I almost told him everything, without saying that it was him we had to observe."
Mon:"But I just didn't understand it."
Flashback  Mon:"Lourd Marain (a French town)? Lourd means heavy... so..." Magda starts laughing
Magda:"It just didn't come. And then Guy came with his deals and I didn't understand a thing about it."
Flashback  Guy:"When Magda has talked, I would like us to make a deal." Magda:"What kind of deal?" Mon:"I don't know, he will tell it when I have the exemption."
Guy:"I knew very well that I had only one opponent left. Mon had the exemption and Magda was the Mole."
Mon:"And if we gave him all the information about the Mole, he could beat Hugo."
Magda:"But I thought, as a Mole I can't accept this."
Flashback  Magda:"We had to observe you today and predict what your reaction would be."
Magda:"It's a game and if you start making deals then it becomes something venomous."
Flashback  Guy gets the red screen...

What you didn't see either
During the interview with Magda and her friend they startes laughing and they got weak of laughter.

We can see how Mon got tattooed, shaved bald, got both his arms placed in a cast and how he painted the nudes. We also see Belle having difficulties drinking coffee and scratching her back with both arms in the cast.

And Michiel, the show's host, did a benji jump himself.

3 months later
Dimi was the first one who had to leave and he was already obsessed about the Mole.
"They were all very nice personalities, who also had negative sides, but you could live with that."

Anke, the heroine of the benji jump, did some discoveries.
"You learn a lot about yourself. characteristics of your family. I thought I was a very nervous person. My father is always very calm. And when I was there I was also very calm."

Reggy mostly has good memories of the group.
"To live together with those people was just great. After the first day I would have done the same thing for those total strangers as I would do for my own family now."

Moniek:"The sheep had to go and the wolves stayed. I think that's true. It were the people with the most warmth , the spontaneous people who had to go first. I really wanted to stay longer for the adventure, but I don't think I would have been able to handle it emotionally."

Sylvie:"It was a search to the Mole, but also a discovery to yourself. I learned that I have to have more patience and I have to be less short-tempered."

Guy:"I have the best memories about the group. If we get together again and 2 or 3 aren't there, than we really miss something."

Mon:"I participated for the game, because I liked it. I didn't do it for the money."

Hugo:"We've all learned something and I will always remember it. I wouldn't have want to miss it, but I'm not sure if I would participate again."

The agreement
Michiel:"Hugo you have won 1.150.000 BEF. What will you do with it?"
Hugo:"Well, we have visited a lot of beautiful locations and I will certainly visit them again. I don't want to disappoint anyone, but I think I will take my family with me instead of you all."
Michiel:"But you've made an agreement?"

And that agreement had already been made the first evening in France, without the crew knowing it, but filmed by the hidden camera's: Hugo:"The winner will get half of it and the rest ist divided."

So everyone, including the Mole got some money.

De Mol
How did the Mole experience everything?
Magda:"I have stagefright. I didn't think I would make it. In th beginning I really tried to be friendly and have fun."
Flashback  episode 1: Magda:"Make sure you pack his personal things too. He likes to wear nice clothes, I think we should keep that in mind."
Magda:"And if I made myself sympathetic, I could provoke some arguments too."
Flashback  episode 3: Mon:"Hugo is getting aggressive. Could he be the Mole?" Magda:"I don't care if he's Mole or not, he doesn't have to be that authoritative!"
Magda:"I thought it was terrible, but fun at the same time, because I was just playing a role."
Flashback  episode 1: Magda:"I am the Mole! No, I'm not the Mole." Belle:"No I don't think you are either." Magda:"I'm too sensitive for that." Belle:"Yes."  Magda:"I would feel guilty all the time." Belle:"Yeah!"
Belle:"Magda tried to deceive me, so I wouldn't suspect her. But she didn't do mean things."
Magda:"I sometimes felt that it was too much what I did. With th killing of the rabbits for exemple."
Flashback  episode 4: Magda:"Moniek, ah, how can she do such a thing?"
Magda:"I felt I had to slow down a bit."
Flashback  Belle:"I'm getting sick." Magda:'Me too! If they don't watch it I will faint. Look at her!"
Magda:"I also had to be happy when a challenge succeeded even though I tried to sabotage it."
Belle:"I wouldn't have been able to do it."
Magda:"Every time I cried, I really cried. It wasn't played. It was a discharge."
Magda:"Before we started the challenge of the Mont Ventoux, Mon said to me..."
Flashback  Mon:"It will probably fail with you guys."
Magda:"And that set my teeth on edge."
Magda:"I only was afraid of Hugo. And it turned out to be quite rightly. He saw me through quite quick."
Flashback  episode 7: Magda:"Why don't you just play you don't have scruples?"
Magda:"I had a rough time being the Mole, but Hugo had a very rough time too. Usely I have to keep groups together and over there I was tearing them apart."
Moniek:"I have never suspected Magda."
Reggy:"What she did was great."
Belle:"I thought she was great. Congratulations to Magda. She really got me."

Magda:"I am still kicking the entire Mole adventure. But I know it always takes a long time with me."
