| Monkey From "Recovering The Satellites" All dressed up no place to go Hey monkey, when you gonna show Your face around me? I know all the wrongs and rights And I just want a little light to fall on me CHORUS: Hey monkey where you been? This lonely spiral I been in Hey monkey when can we begin? Hey monkey where you been? Well I'm all messed up That's nothing new Hey monkey when you open Your blue eyes I Don't know if I'm wide awake Or dreamin' but all I ever need is Everything CHORUS Just get the world off your shoulders And close your pretty blue eyes Hey monkey what's life without An occasional surprise? I got nowhere but home to go I got Ben Folds on my radio right now And I'm in trouble for the things I need Hey monkey don't you wanna be Needed too? CHORUS Hey monkey where you been? Hey monkey where you been? |
| This song kinda never really fit in to me at the time I first heard it, but in retrospect this song seems like a stepping stone into the sound of the next two albums- This Desert Life and Hard Candy. One thing that caught me off guard when first listening to this song was how happy it was. Up to this point most of the themes to AD's songs had been about longing, heartbreak, and hurt. But this was really the first song where the lyrics are noticeably upbeat- a trend that would follow on to future albums. There's a bootleg of a concert in Denver in December 1999 and AD introduces the song like so: "This is a song we wrote for our second album and we never really played it, but it's the most optimistic love song I ever wrote. We just never really played it before. But I got a girlfriend, and she's SO cool. And even though she's not here tonight I play this every night to her." So there you go for what that song means for AD. For me this song has a similar meaning. I've attached to a specific girl in my past, but this song really is symbolic of the feelings when a relationship is just starting and everything's great. Eventually everything turns to shit and I'm right back to square one. But for that brief moment, everything is great and there's no signs of trouble. And that's where this song fits in. |
