History of Will County Model Railroad Association (formerly Romeoville Model Railroad Association) The Romeoville Model Railroad Association was founded in 1979 by Jim Rapinac of Romeoville Il. The idea to form a model railroad club came about because most homes in Romeoville did not have an extra space to build a layout. We were sponsored by Ben Green director of the Romeoville Recreation Department, and we were located to what we thought was a perfect location: The "Lake Shirley" Beach house. We remained there for the next twelve years. An extensive permanent HO layout was built at this location. Trouble struck when the building that housed RMRA was suddenly condemned and demolished for a senior housing center that never happened! The members were able to remove their trains and personal effects before the building was demolished. We moved our layout and club materials to one of our member’s homes, who had an empty airplane hanger! We kept out club there for almost a year. We were able to move here and there for awhile; we were bound and determined not to let the RMRA fail! After some looking around, we were able to move into the Romeoville Fountaindale Library. Again we built quite a layout and then... Once again we were moving, The Village of Romeoville is growing and the rest of the library is needed for "progress". We were next housed in the Jefferson Square Mall, Joliet IL and we changed our name; We are now known as: "The Will County Model Railroad Association" Formerly RMRA.
We thought this would be our last move. Hah!
We are now moving to Chicago Street in Joliet, near the Rialto Theater. Maybe this will be our last move... The public is welcome to visit and ask questions about our trains..... or, even
how we make such great scenery! come visit, see ya soon..
