| Embedded Intimacy
I remember. A sultry space wedged between pillows and whispers, passion and stares. The connection - more than physical, and the bed - more than a stage. Paradise. I revisit and forget, relive and invent. Each time something is defined, distorted, becoming, dissolving, the same yet different. R.M.N. Investigating the notion of intimacy between lovers, I approach each mark with a focus upon materials, space, and concept. The viewer is presented with an image that questions area and space. The final drawings become my tactile translation of intimacy. The picture plane functions as a container for activity. Within the containment area is a subtle color-shift, a thick application of material, and a use of line to address space. Memories serve as triggers to capture a mood via color and texture, while the line establishes spatial relationships. The viewer is invited to trace the line and folds of material into and across the picture plane. The imagery undulates as an intertwining line in a series of vacillating layers. Materials sensually flux, while line suggests shape, form, and motion. The single unifying organic contour presents intersections and line weight to establish a trail that moves the eye around the picture plane. Each drawing implies a soft comfortable atmosphere where a traveling line advances and recedes from sight. The sgraffito line activates and accentuates the materiality of the surface. Emphasis is given to the concept through the use of scale. A small picture plane within an already small area brings the viewer to take a close look. Standing only a few inches away, the viewer becomes part of the spatial intimacy. The proximity between my work and the viewer creates a new layer of intimacy that completes the concept.
