View looking NW towards US 41 and Hammond, IN of ND Highland Tower. This was the first location that I worked for the NYC upon hiring out in 1962. I posted as a student with the regular operator for two days and then started to work the 3rd trick for one week for the regular man who was vacationing. The C&O owned the line immediately above the camera while the line to the left was owned by the Erie. The line crossing in front of the tower was the NYC Big 4 line that ran from Indiana Harbor to Danville. Mark Stanek photo April 1981 |

This view towards the NW of Hohman Tower in downtown Hammond, Indiana was taken sometime in the late sixites. The tracks from left to right are the IHB and MC lines out of Gibson yard going to Dolton and the diagonal track belonged to the Monon and was used by the Monon to get to Chicago and Dearborn Station. Another shot of Hohman tower looking west as an Indiana Harbor Belt coal drag heads for Gibson yard, about to cross the C&O and Erie diamonds. The Erie maintained a yard in downtown Hammond and the Monon yard was in South Hammond. David Haynes photo, date unknown. |
