English/Language Arts Curriculum Reading Standards for 8th Grade Students 1. Students use a variety of strategies to help them recognize words. 2. Students read orally with fluency, accuracy and expression. 3. Students apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend texts. 4. Students read and respond to a wide range of literature from many periods and various genres (non-fiction, fiction, poetry, drama, functional documents, public documents, etc.). 5. Students read at least 25 book or book equivalents each year. The materials should include traditional and contemporary literature (both fiction and non-fiction) as well as magazines, newspapers, textbooks, and online materials. Such reading should represent a diverse collection of material from at least 3 different literary forms and from at least 5 different writers. 6. Students read and comprehend at least 4 books (or book equivalents) about one issue or subject, or 4 books by a single writer, or 4 books in one genre.
