Our Factory
How we make our Tin Craft Items. Rattandeep Enterprises in India operates the plant where most of the boats available today are made .Plastic has replaced many of our products today, but RATTANDEEP is dedicated to continuing the old custom of making ALL of their tin products by HAND! We do not use electric or pneumatic powered presses or cutting machines. All of the
lithograph work is done by hand as well, and there are many steps to making one toy. Some of our hand presses take up to 5 or 6 men to operate, especially when we are pressing hulls. Many sections of the deck and fittings are cut literally by hands.
Rattandeep is very proud, as he should be, that it is now illegal to use slave, child or prison labor to make toys in his country. These groups have never been used at RATTANDEEP. These toys, as opposed to some Chinese toys, are made by artisans of the tin toy trade. Unfortunately, some parts of the world do still use child labor. We are very proud to be a company which is trying desperately to keep the hand made tin toys alive, and at the same time providing employment for those who are best at the trade.
RATTANDEEP has very recently released a new pop pop boat. It is a PT 109 patrol gunboat. It is very reminiscent of the old Marx Mosquito Fleet boats which have long since vanished except in some collections. There are many new ships and boats planned for the future. You can imagine how long it takes to design and make a sizeable stock of these boats. Shortly you'll see us offering key wind battleships as well as some current pop pop boats converted to work on a wind up mechanism too.
The links here are photos of various parts of the RATTANDEEP factory operation. You will be amazed to see 4 to 6 men hand pressing a boat hull, or cutting out lithographed sections of a boat. |
