The Four Pillars: The bases of society to the traditional minded dwarf are the Four Pillars: Revenge, Word, Tradition and Gold. A true dwarf must gain as much gold as he can in life, always keep his word even it means pain / suffering / loss of body parts / death He must follow every practice handed down to him by his father despite any inconvenience / embarrassment/ personal injury this will cause him. He will avenge any slight or injury no matter how apparently insignificant it is1. For the tradition minded dwarf it all comes to a climax when after hoarded a tremendous amount of gold and slain all his enemies horribly the dwarf seals himself alive into his death trapped tomb with his horde.
Rockhome: The great dwarfish city in the Calderian mountains. Population of about 50,000 (as compared to a typical Anoboran city of about 100,000+). Few humans have entered it.
Beards and Braids: Hair is used to measure gender and virility with dwarves. Thus the dwarfish male is sure that the dwarf with the biggest and bushiest beard get the most chicks and views the thickness of a dwarfish woman's braids the same way a human male views cleavage.
Hidden WarsTM: The epic war between Dwarves and Goblin kind that has lasted for thousand of years. Largely unnoticed by humanity.
Lùnúê-Tùnzù "The wide eyed ones whom you don't want to eat dinner with": In their underground caves and tunnels the dwarves have long fought the so called Hidden WarsTM with goblin kind. The long fighting has left some dwarves unable to imaging any other life but one of violence and blood.
Búghôr Vúh "be the Bastard": The time honored tradition of using stealth, deceit, and underhanded dealings to gain wealth. Just as long as you do not break your word all is fair. Needless to say coupling this with the pillar of 'Revenge' means dwarf communities spend a lot of time feuding.
Zhvúnê Tøzhs: In the underworld of dwarf kind food based on insects, rats, and fungus is the standard fare. Yet there are times during the Hidden WarsTM when insects, rats, or fungus are in short supply and that is were the Zhvúnê Tøzhs come in, solving the Dwarf communities food and corpse disposal problems all at once.
Phúd-Knøghúr "Sauce Drinker" (also translated as "Tree Kissers"): Elves. If it is possible2, dwarves take an even dimmer view of elves than humans. This is most likely due both being the kind of creatures that lurk around in fairy tales so close contact had stripped the dwarves of any romantic notions of elf kind. Beyond the obvious draw backs to elves and the occasional blood feud to sour the dwarfish view the elfish practices of frolicking in the woods, composing romantic poems, drinking wine3 and concerns over personal hygiene all firmly reinforce the dwarfish view that elves are effete and useless. Elves for their part consider the dwarves' obsession for results and disregard for style as dumfound crude behavior for a race that ancient (Humans they can believe would be so crass as to eat something just because they liked the taste but dwarves have been around long enough to know better. tsk, tsk).
Zhúk-Ghúr "Giving of Heart" Human: While human's short lives are the most notable thing to a dwarves they are always careful to note humanities' power in technology, magic, shear numbers, and great access to gold. Surprisingly, to the dwarfish way of thinking, humanity practices things like compassion which means giving money away just because someone dose not have it! Needless to say this bit is why dwarves like humans so much.
Some Dwarfish impressions of human and non-human societies;
Anoboreans: Quite good money grubbing going on there and in the south the humans have some ideas about revenge that brings a tear to the dwarfish eye. But the Anoborean concerns over the arts smacks uncomfortable close to ,…elvishness if you ask a dwarf.Suria They don't let their brains interfere with their passions, which makes them easy marks and pleasant people to sell too. Still, all that blood and violence; Suria, a nice place to visit but a dwarf wouldn't like to live there.
Ruthania A stern and disciplined people. Good! Penniless losers. Bad! On the other hand their conquerors the Yhule will buy people from you that you have no right to call your' own property! Dwarves like it.
Rawmains (Zhúk-Ghúr-Bún). Many dwarves live in the Rawmain Empire. They find them delightfully just like humans, see Zhúk-Ghúr
Ursc - Many Dwarves live in Jouthelm were the Ursc hale from (Dwarves after all being a shoe in with society were fashions center around wearing mail, horned helms, and carrying axes). Dwarves have similar attitude to the Urcs as the Surians; but to be fair an eight foot intelligent tool using bear who uses the same word for "food" and "enemy" is much less dangerous to be around than a Surian.
Wlúch: The dwarfish practice of borrowing money
intending to not pay it back.
1 Despite popular belief Dwarfish revenge is supposed to be and "eye for an eye" practice. Many times dwarf elders will remind their children or grand children that is not required for a dwarf to chop off the injuring parties' head then fill its' nostrils full of cheese each and every time vengeance is taken.2 Elves are regarded as soul stealing demons by superstitious humans. Better educated humans discount this opinion as an unearned over exaggeration of elfish competence.
3 With a diet based on fungus, rats, and insects, vinegar is a major part of Dwarfish cooking. Lots of vinegar that is. Drinking wine in a dwarf's eyes is kind like someone drinking ketchup made from green tomatoes to a twentieth century American; very odd behavior.
