Political Cartoons 1983-84

All drawings were done ink on Paper, and were relevant to events of that particular time.

"We Have the Power"                                                               December 1983
Having grown up during the Cold War (it did not end until 1989), the friction between the two powers were very often played out in the media.  This reality was further witnessed when I visited East Berlin a few years later.  It was only last year that I met someone my age at work that grew up behind the Iron Curtain and discussed the feelings we had for our repective countries.

I approached this drawing more with my own concerns than any particular event that week.  It was not until 1989 that I visited the Peace Museum in Hiroshima, Japan, and felt the full emotional impact that this silent war weighed on the world.

"Do you think he passed his Steroid Test"                                    December 1983
By the early 80's we had all seen these incredible athletes come out of East Germany.  Alhtough they declined the fact (unveiled after the wall came down), the world did not believe them.  As a consequence routine substance testing was started at the Olympics.

I think that I had more fun drawing the tatoo on the bear than anything else.  At this stage I was still keeping the drawings loose and sketchy.  Also having a lack of any proper drafting equipment in my dorm room contributed to this fact.
