The Eyes of The Ghazal

By Robert James DeBurgh (Poet)

And Lo! Before me stands Fatima, daughter of
Suleyman,
That Holy Man of Khandahar.
This mmaiden fair brings sighs. Aaaaah!
Her eyes are like unto the twin Pools at
Beth-el-Fezaar
Wherein are twice reflected the risen MORNING STAR
From afar, and too, whereat th' felicitous Ghazal
Doth oft-times come to drink the clear water which
Cometh from on high, tumbling o'er rock and
Cliff as its mellifluous song carries it along
To the Pools at Beth-el-Fezaar which are like unto the eyes of the
Mountain Rose so fair
And also to those of the Ghazal that drinks there.

Khandahar 1888

NOTES ON PROVENANCE:
This delightful Work was discovered in the leather binding of an old ledger which had been stripped to re-work into a Horznuth, that is a kind of Afghan sporran. That's the God's own Truth!
