ROSH HASHANAH
Teach them where it comes from. Bring in pictures of rams and show them the horns. Bring in a real shofar, let them try to blow it. have someone blow it so they can hear the sound. Make a ram hat (strip of color paper and two horns out of the hat so that it looks like they have horns- they color it. or paint the two horns) Go around the classroom like little rams. Then make their own shofar. Get party blowers and take off the bottom. have the kids decorate a color paper or paint something brown and roll it  and attach it to the blower. the kids can have a jolly well time blowing away.
Shofar Shuttle -GAME (4 older kids)- One kid is the shofar caller; line up all the kids across the caller- CHANT: Shofar, Shofar, play your tune. Shofar, Shofar, we'll reach you soon- or- Shofar, Shofar, Let's hear you blow. Your awesome notes will tell us how to go!!  The shofar caller then, "blows" the shofar by either calling out the name of the call or the actual blow itself- Tekiah-kids take one long step towards caller. Shevarim- three short steps towards caller. Teruah 9 baby steps towards caller.

Eddible bees: p.butter balls for the body. almond slivers for the wings. chocolate chips for the eyes.
A cute honey jar. baby food jar. wrapped in yellow tissue paper. black tape around it. googly eyes on the cover. wings to the back and write on tit 'bee my honey':)

RETURN TO rosh hashanah:
Of course, snack should be the actual apples and honey. There are many things to do with apples at circle time. Depending on your age. Take a basket of all different color apples. separate them, count them, measure a person with apples. cut it open, show the star inside it, count the pits.... chart these observations. have fun.
apple prints: cut the apple in half and stick a fork thru the top, the peel part. have the kids pick it up, place it in stamp pads and  onto paper.  a further idea . laminate the paper. put a piece of velcro in the middle and velcro a plastic bowl to the middle of the mat. This now becomes an apple dish. (oh you can add a picture of the kid to the mat before you laminate it).
dramatic play. make an apple shape out of a red oaktag and a string so they can put it over their head. they are in an apple costume. you can even take pictures of the kids in it and use it as a 'leshanah tova card'. for the stem. take a strip of color paper and a stick on top . that is the hat and the stem of the apple.
Apple sauce: Make it and eat it by snack. give the kids plastic knives and apples and have them cut it up. apples. sugar , cin. and a half a cup of water.
cards: one idea is above, another one is to make a jar of honey card that says 'Leshana Tova from your honey...'

Here is a creative and more importantly hands-on activity for the CHILDREN to do! 1. Give the children a big piece of clay. Have them work the clay by kneading, banging, and throwing it (great for developing muscles in there hands necessary for fine motor skills). 2. Have the children roll out the clay until it is flat but not too thin. 3. Have the children work with a partner for this step. Give them Popsicle sticks and have the children take turns tracing (carving) out each others hands 4. Children will then glue a plastic cup onto the center of their clay hands. 5. Gentle fold clay fingers around plastic cup so that it looks as if the hand is holding the cup. 6. Let dry and apply Modge Podge to seal. 7. Place several plastic cups into the center cup for honey as to avoid having to clean.
